Quantifying treatment effects when flexibly modeling individual change in a nonlinear mixed effects model

2021

A core task in analyzing randomized clinical trials based on longitudinal data is to find the best way to describe the change over time for each treatment arm. We review the implementation and estimation of a flexible piecewise Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) to model change over time. The flexible piecewise HLM consists of two phases with differing rates of change. The breakpoints between these two phases, as well as the rates of change per phase are allowed to vary between treatment groups as well as individuals. While this approach may provide better model fit, how to quantify treatment diff erences over the longitudinal period is not clear. In this paper, we develop a procedure for summ…

Cruise passengers' trajectories at destination. A Dynamic Time Warping approach.

2015

The present work aims at proposing an analysis of cruise passengers trajectories at the destination through Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. Data collected through GPS devices on cruise passengers’ behavior in the port of Palermo are analyzed in order to show similarities and differences among their spatial trajectories at the destination. A cluster analysis is performed in order to identify cruise passengers’ segments based on trajectories’ similarity. Results are of interest from both a methodological perspective related with the analysis of GPS data, and for the management and planning of cruise tourism destinations.

An efficient prototype merging strategy for the condensed 1-NN rule through class-conditional hierarchical clustering

2002

Abstract A generalized prototype-based classification scheme founded on hierarchical clustering is proposed. The basic idea is to obtain a condensed 1-NN classification rule by merging the two same-class nearest clusters, provided that the set of cluster representatives correctly classifies all the original points. Apart from the quality of the obtained sets and its flexibility which comes from the fact that different intercluster measures and criteria can be used, the proposed scheme includes a very efficient four-stage procedure which conveniently exploits geometric cluster properties to decide about each possible merge. Empirical results demonstrate the merits of the proposed algorithm t…

Overlapping Community Structure in Co-authorship Networks: A Case Study

2014

Community structure is one of the key properties of real-world complex networks. It plays a crucial role in their behaviors and topology. While an important work has been done on the issue of community detection, very little attention has been devoted to the analysis of the community structure. In this paper, we present an extensive investigation of the overlapping community network deduced from a large-scale co-authorship network. The nodes of the overlapping community network represent the functional communities of the co-authorship network, and the links account for the fact that communities share some nodes in the co-authorship network. The comparative evaluation of the topological prop…

Représentations sociales et identité sociale dans les groupes hiérarchiques : le cas du tennis

2019

This doctoral work is based on the hierarchical social organization of tennis players. The ai mis to observe the effects of this hierarchical structure, on the social representations that groups of players have about tennis. The positionning of an individual, or a groupe within a social structure, has an impact on the way it is perceived and how he perceided himself. This perception results from a process of social comparison. This positionning also has an impact on the identification of individuals. Three studies are conducted. The first is interested in the perception of the organization of the social matrix of tennis by the players. It highlights the existence of different groups of prac…

Towards a More Effective Hospital: Helping Health Professionals to Learn from their Own Practice by Developing an Easy to use Clinical Processes Quer…

2016

Application of complex socio-technical systems theory to optimization of clinical processes in hospitals highlights the importance of the acceptance and promotion of responsible autonomy among health professionals. Therefore the independent ability for clinicians to search for answers to questions which are outside the scope of pre-made reports is important. However, the ad-hoc data querying process is slow and error prone due to inability of health professionals to access data directly without involving IT experts. The problem lies in the complexity of means used to query data. We propose a new natural language- and star ontology-based ad-hoc data querying approach which reduces the steep …

A service-oriented routing scheme with load balancing in wireless mesh networks

2008

Wireless mesh networks will play an important role in the next-generation wireless communication systems as it can provide wide coverage and scalable broadband Internet access services. However, congestion in such networks may lead to throughput degradation, packet loss and longer transmission delay. Therefore, routing and traffic forwarding schemes which are aware of the congestion status of a wireless network can efficiently improve network performance. In this paper, we propose a new congestion-aware routing scheme which may direct different paths for different services types, according to network congestion status. The goal of this routing scheme is to use traffic load metric for choosi…

What Bayesians Expect of Each Other

1991

Abstract Our goal is to study general properties of one Bayesian's subjective beliefs about the behavior of another Bayesian's subjective beliefs. We consider two Bayesians, A and B, who have different subjective distributions for a parameter θ, and study Bayesian A's expectation of Bayesian B's posterior distribution for θ given some data Y. We show that when θ can take only two values, Bayesian A always expects Bayesian B's posterior distribution to lie between the prior distributions of A and B. Conditions are given under which a similar result holds for an arbitrary real-valued parameter θ. For a vector parameter θ we present useful expressions for the mean vector and covariance matrix …

On Rao Score and Pearson X2 Statistics in Generalized Linear Models

2005

The identity of the Rao score and PearsonX 2 statistics is well known in the areas where the latter was first introduced: goodness-of-fit in contingency tables and binary responses. We show in this paper that the same identity holds when the two statistics are used for testing goodness-of-fit of Generalized Linear Models. We also highlight the connections that exist between the two statistics when they are used for the comparison of nested models. Finally, we discuss some merits of these unifying results.

Modeling Posidonia oceanica growth data: from linear to generalized linear mixed models

2010

The statistical analysis of annual growth of Posidonia oceanica is traditionally carried out through Gaussian linear models applied to untransformed, or log-transformed, data. In this paper, we claim that there are good reasons for re-considering this established practice, since real data on annual growth often violate the assumptions of Gaussian linear models, and show that the class of Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) represents a useful alternative for handling such violations. By analyzing Sicily PosiData-1, a real dataset on P. oceanica growth data gathered in the period 2000–2002 along the coasts of Sicily, we find that in the majority of cases Normality is rejected and the effect of …
