Dynamical left-right symmetry breaking.

1995

We study a left--right symmetric model which contains only elementary gauge boson and fermion fields and no scalars. The phenomenologically required symmetry breaking emerges dynamically leading to a composite Higgs sector with a renormalizable effective Lagrangian. We discuss the pattern of symmetry breaking and phenomenological consequences of this scenario. It is shown that a viable top quark mass can be achieved for the ratio of the VEVs of the bi--doublet $\tan\beta\equiv\kappa/\kappa'$ =~ 1.3--4. For a theoretically plausible choice of the parameters the right--handed scale can be as low as $\sim 20 TeV$; in this case one expects several intermediate and low--scale scalars in addition…

Limits on associated production of visibly and invisibly decaying Higgs bosons from Z decays

1994

Many extensions of the standard electroweak model Higgs sector suggest that the main Higgs decay channel is "invisible", for example, $h \to J J$ where $J$ denotes the majoron, a weakly interacting pseudoscalar Goldstone boson associated to the spontaneous violation of lepton number. In many of these models the Higgs boson may also be produced in association to a massive pseudoscalar boson (HA), in addition to the standard Bjorken mechanism (HZ). We describe a general strategy to determine limits from LEP data on the masses and couplings of such Higgs bosons, using the existing data on acoplanar dijet events as well as data on four and six $b$ jet event topologies. For the sake of illustrat…

The Case of a WW Dynamical Scalar Resonance within a Chiral Effective Description of the Strongly Interacting Higgs Sector

1999

We have studied the strongly interacting $W_L W_L \to W_L W_L$ I=L=0 partial wave amplitude making use of effective chiral Lagrangians. The Higgs boson is explicitly included and the N/D method is used to unitarize the amplitude. We recover the chiral perturbative expansion at next to leading order for low energies. The cases $m_H<< 4v$ and $m_H>> 4 v$ are considered in detail. It is shown that in the latter situation a state appears with a mass $\lesssim 1$ TeV. This state is dynamically generated through the strong interactions between the $W_L$ and is not responsible for the spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking. However, its shape can be very similar to that of the $…

Higgs Sector of the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

2001

We perform an exhaustive analysis of the most general Higgs sector of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRM). We find that the CP properties of the vacuum state are connected to the Higgs spectrum: if CP is broken spontaneously, the MLRM does not approach the Standard Model in the limit of a decoupling left-right symmetry breaking scale. Depending on the size of the CP phases scenarios with extra non-decoupling flavor-violating doublet Higgses or very light SU(2) triplet Higgses emerge, both of which are ruled out by phenomenology. For zero CP phases the non-standard Higgses decouple only if a very unnatural fine-tuning condition is fulfilled. We also discuss generalizations to a non…

Neutral Higgs sector of the MSSM without R-p

1999

We analyse the neutral scalar sector of the MSSM without R-parity. Our analysis is performed for a one-generation model in terms of ``basis-independent'' parameters, and includes one-loop corrections due to large yukawa couplings. We concentrate on the consequences of large $R_p$ violating masses in the soft sector, which mix the Higgses with the sleptons, because these are only constrained by their one-loop contributions to neutrino masses. We focus on the effect of $R_p$-violation on the Higgs mass and branching ratios. We find that the experimental lower bound on the lightest CP-even Higgs in this model can be lower than in the MSSM.

Bounds on neutral and charged Higgs from the LHC

2014

After the discovery of a Standard Model-like boson with mass of about 125 GeV the possibility of an enlarged scalar sector arises naturally. Here we present the current status of the phenomenology of the two-Higgs-doublet models with a special focus on the charged Higgs sector. If one considers a fermiophobic charged Higgs (it does not couple to fermions at tree level), all present experimental bounds are evaded trivially, therefore one needs to consider other decay and production channels. In this work we also present some of the interesting features of this specific scenario.

Improved tau-lepton tools for Higgs boson hunting

2014

In this work, we use the results from Higgs searches in the $\gamma\gamma$ and $\tau\tau$ decay channels at LHC and indirect bounds as BR$(B \to X_s \gamma)$ to constrain the parameter space of a generic MSSM Higgs sector. In particular, we include the latest CMS results that look for additional Higgs states with masses up to 1 TeV. We show that the $\tau \tau$ channel is the best and most accurate weapon in the hunt for new Higgs states beyond the Standard Model. We obtain that present experimental results rule out additional neutral Higgs bosons in a generic MSSM below 300 GeV for any value of $\tan \beta$ and, for instance, values of $\tan \beta$ above 30 are only possible for Higgs mass…

Bounds on Warped Extra Dimensions from a Standard Model-like Higgs Boson

2011

We point out that the discovery of a light Higgs boson in the \gamma\gamma, ZZ and WW decay channels at the LHC, with cross sections not far from the predictions of the Standard Model, would have important implications for the parameters of warped extra-dimension models. Due to loop effects of Kaluza-Klein particles, these models predict a significant reduction of the Higgs production cross section via gluon-gluon fusion, combined with an enhancement of the ratio Br(h->\gamma\gamma)/Br(h->ZZ). LHC measurements of these decays will probe Kaluza-Klein masses up to the 10 TeV range, exceeding by far the reach for direct production.

Light charged Higgs at the beginning of the LHC era

2008

The terascale will be explored with the start of the LHC. One of the most fundamental questions which we expect to be answered is the root of electroweak symmetry breaking and whether the Higgs mechanism is realized in nature or not. In this context we pose the question if existing experimental data still allow for a light non-minimal Higgs sector. We tackle this question first in the context of the two Higgs doublet model and then we concentrate in two supersymmetric models, the constrained MSSM and the MSSM with non-universal Higgs masses. In both supersymmetric scearios, light pseudoscalar and light charged-Higgs bosons are still viable provided tan beta is large. In this regime, we emph…

Determining the CP parity of Higgs bosons at the LHC in the $\tau$ to 1-prong decay channels

2008

We propose a method for determining the CP nature of a neutral Higgs boson or spin-zero resonance $\phi$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in its $\phi\to\tau^{-}\tau^{+}$ decay channel. The method can be applied to any 1-prong $\tau$-decay mode, which comprise the majority of the $\tau$-lepton decays. The proposed observables allow to discriminate between pure scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs-boson states and/or between a CP-conserving and CP-violating Higgs sector. We show for the decays $\tau\to\pi\nu_{\tau}$ that the method maintains its discriminating power when measurement uncertainties are taken into account. The method will be applicable also at a future linear $e^{+}e^{-}$ colli…
