X-ray emission from MP Muscae: an old classical T Tauri star

2007

We study the properties of X-ray emitting plasma of MP Mus, an old classical T Tauri star. We aim at checking whether an accretion process produces the observed X-ray emission and at deriving the accretion parameters and the characteristics of the shock-heated plasma. We compare the properties of MP Mus with those of younger classical T Tauri stars to test whether age is related to the properties of the X-ray emission plasma. XMM-Newton X-ray spectra allows us to measure plasma temperatures, abundances, and electron density. In particular the density of cool plasma probes whether X-ray emission is produced by plasma heated in the accretion process. X-ray emission from MP Mus originates from…

Small Angle Neutron Scattering from Systems of Interacting Particles. Modelling High Density Micellar Fluids

1992

The need for analytical solutions of the scattering equation for complex situations (polydisperse samples, scattering from non centrosymmetrical particles, etc.) has somehow escaped the attention of the workers in the Small Angle Scattering field, although it is clear that, at the level of sophistication today available for the experiments, a more rigorous approach is necessary. For quite a few years our group has been actively engaged in SANS research and has occasionally devoted its attention to develop alternative ways of data analysis based on more rigorous solutions of the scattering equation.

Thermalization in the initial stage of heavy ion collisions

2017

The high density non-abelian matter produced in heavy ion collisions is extremely anisotropic. Prethermal dynamics for the anisotropic and weakly coupled matter is discussed. Thermalization is realized with the effective kinetic theory in the leading order accuracy of the weakly coupled expansion. With the initial condition from color glass condensate, hydrodynamization time for the LHC energies is realized to be about 1 fm/c, while the thermalization happens much later than the hydrodynamization. peerReviewed

Lipoprotein profile and high-density lipoproteins: subfractions distribution in centenarians.

1998

In order to assess the role of HDL on longevity, we studied HDL subfraction distribution in centenarian women compared with a group of weight- and gender-matched healthy normolipidemic controls. We did not find any significant difference in the mean plasma lipid, apolipoprotein, and Lp(a) levels. On the contrary, in spite of similar HDL-cholesterol concentrations (1.32 ± 0.41 mmol/l in centenarians vs. 1.32 ± 0.25 mmol/l in controls, p = not significant), HDL2b and HDL3a levels were, respectively, significantly increased and significantly reduced in centenarians in comparison with controls (HDL2b 32.4 ± 9.2% in centenarian…

Mboat7 down-regulation by hyper-insulinemia induces fat accumulation in hepatocytes.

2020

Background: Naturally occurring variation in Membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain-containing 7 (MBOAT7), encoding for an enzyme involved in phosphatidylinositol acyl-chain remodelling, has been associated with fatty liver and hepatic disorders. Here, we examined the relationship between hepatic Mboat7 down-regulation and fat accumulation. Methods: Hepatic MBOAT7 expression was surveyed in 119 obese individuals and in experimental models. MBOAT7 was acutely silenced by antisense oligonucleotides in C57Bl/6 mice, and by CRISPR/Cas9 in HepG2 hepatocytes. Findings: In obese individuals, hepatic MBOAT7 mRNA decreased from normal liver to steatohepatitis, independently of diabetes, inflammatio…

Growth and yields of 'Arbequina' high-density planting systems in three different olive growing areas in Italy

2014

The sustainability of the traditional olive-growing sector in EU countries characterised by high production costs and a low selling price for the oil was mainly determined by EU subsidies available for the sector. With the opening of the free trade area by the Barcellona Declaration of 1995 and a cut in EU subsidies in 2014, crucial changes in the sector are now needed. In order to increase the competitiveness of EU olive production, attention should be given to new high-yielding and mechanized cultivation systems. In the 1990s, Spain introduced new high-density planting systems (1,200-2,000 trees/ha) using three low-vigour and early-fruiting cultivars ( Arbequina , Arbosana and Koroneiki )…

Early bearing and vegetative growth of 153 Sicilian olive accessions

2018

In 2014, an olive germplasm collection was established in south-western Sicily, Italy. The collection included 153 Sicilian accessions and 3 international varieties (reference), each with 7 trees, spaced at 5×2 m and trained to hedgerow system. The aim of the trial was to study early growth and yield responses of the accessions to super-high planting density (SHD). Trunk cross sectional area, tree height, pruning weights, shoot positioning, blooming and fruit yield (kg tree-1) were measured in 2015 and 2016. Based on trunk growth and amount of prunings, the 153 accessions were separated into four categories of vigor as it follows: very high vigor (6 accessions), high vigor (13), medium vigo…

Near-Tc second-harmonic emission in high-density bulk MgB2 at microwave frequency

2006

We discuss the microwave second-harmonic generation in high-density bulk MgB2, prepared by the reactive liquid Mg infiltration technology. The intensity of the harmonic signal has been investigated as a function of temperature and amplitudes of the DC and microwave magnetic fields. The results are discussed in the framework of a phenomenological theory, based on the two-fluid model, which assumes that both the microwave and static magnetic fields, penetrating in the surface layers of the sample, weakly perturb the partial concentrations of the normal and superconducting fluids. We show that, in order to account for the experimental results, it is essential to suppose that in MgB2 the densit…

Reconstructing wells from high density regions extracted from super-resolution single particle trajectories

2019

AbstractLarge amount of super-resolution single particle trajectories has revealed that the cellular environment is enriched in heterogenous regions of high density, which remain unexplained. The biophysical properties of these regions are characterized by a drift and their extension (a basin of attraction) that can be estimated from an ensemble of trajectories. We develop here two statistical methods to recover the dynamics and local potential wells (field of force and boundary) using as a model a truncated Ornstein-Ulhenbeck process. The first method uses the empirical distribution of points, which differs inside and outside the potential well, while the second focuses on recovering the d…

Effect of H Adsorption on the Magnetic Properties of an Fe Island on a W(110) Surface

2019

<p>Low-dimensional materials, such as ultrathin films, nanoislands and wires, are actively being researched due to their interesting magnetic properties and possible technological applications for example in high density data storage. Results of calculations of an Fe nanoisland on a W(110) support are presented here with particular focus on the effect of hydrogen adsorption on its magnetic properties. This is an important consideration since hydrogen is present even under ultra-high vacuum conditions. The calculations are based on density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. The adsorption of H atoms is found to strongly decrease the magnetic moment of the …
