Statistical methods for determining components non-liniarities, from thermoluminescent devices

Thermoluminescent (TLD) dosimeters enjoy wide usage due to low cost and simplicity of use. They have however large errors at high doses in mixed-radiation fields, where non-linear effects occur. Algorithms based on the Akaike criterion [1] are presented for determining the maximal (physically meaningful) polynomial order with which the non-linearities are modeled. This depends on the number of points existing on a curve and on the points' errors.

Background: Up to every fourth woman with multiple sclerosis (MS) or neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) suffers a clinically relevant relapse during pregnancy. High doses of steroids bear some serious risks, especially within the first trimester of pregnancy. Sex differences in estimation of time intervals and in reaction time are removed by moderate but not high doses of caffeine in coffee

Estimation of the passage of time in the seconds-to-minutes range and reaction time are strongly dependent on a hypothetical internal clock. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter most closely related to the rate of this clock. Caffeine, probably the most consumed drug in the world, leads to an augmentation of dopamine neurotransmission. Pre-treatment with high doses of cocaine decreases the reinforcing effects of cocaine in the conditioned place preference paradigm.

The aim of the present study was to determine if pre-exposure to high doses of cocaine can subsequently alter the rewarding effects of this drug. Adult male mice received a pretreatment of physiological saline, or 12.5 or 25 mg/kg of cocaine (one injection a day for five days). After an interval of six days without injections, the rewarding effects of low doses of cocaine (0.5, 1 or 1.5 mg/kg) were evaluated in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. Doses of 1 and 1.5 mg/kg induced a clear CPP in animals pre-treated with saline but were ineffective in those pre-treated with 25 mg/kg of cocaine. A principios del siglo XX surgió un nuevo modelo de teatro bufo denominado género sicalíptico caracterizado por sus altas dosis de frivolidad y erotismo que hizo furor en la escena madrileña. Vicente Lleó Balbastre (1870-1922) fue el máximo exponente del género en el teatro musical. Bajo su dirección, como empresario y compositor, el Teatro Eslava se convirtió en el templo de la sicalipsis. En este artículo se estudia el nacimiento y eclosión del género, se recopilan todas las obras sicalípticas de Vicente Lleó en la época dorada de la sicalipsis en el teatro musical y se analizan las principales características de su estilo compositivo.

The effects of testosterone propionate, an anabolic-androgenic steroid, on the behavior displayed during a social encounter by gonadally intact male mice were investigated. Animals were distributed into three groups according to their attack latency in a pre-screening test (high-, moderate-, and low-attacking mice) and each group received weekly injections of 60 or 120 mg/kg of testosterone or sesame oil for 10 weeks. Oral glutathione increases hepatic glutathione and prevents acetaminophen toxicity

Administration of oral glutathione (GSH) increases hepatic GSH levels in fasted rats, in mice treated with GSH depletors such as diethylmaleate and in mice treated with high doses of paracetamol. An increase in hepatic GSH levels after administration of oral GSH does not occur in animals treated with buthionine suphoximine, an inhibitor of GSH synthesis. Administration of oral GSH leads to an increase in the concentration of L-cysteine, a precursor of GSH, in portal blood plasma. Oral administration of L-methio-nine to fasted rats produced a significant decrease of hepatic ATP, but not in fed rats. IVIG in APS pregnancy

For more than two decades, the intravenous administration of high doses of IgG pooled from the plasma of healthy donors (immune globulin therapy, also known as ‘IVIG’) has benefited patients with a variety of autoimmune disorders. A potential therapeutic role of IVIG in the prevention of thrombosis and of miscarriages in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) has been postulated. Multicenter randomized controlled trials attempted to define the role of IVIG in preventing pregnancy complications in APS indicate that simple anticoagulation could not be completely satisfactory, and certain patient subgroups might take advantage of IVIG therapy alone or in combination with heparin.

Dexamethasone in severe head injuries

The results of a double-blind-study on the effects of placebo, a low dose and a high dose of dexamethasone on severe closed head injury are presented. 95 patients were selected and carefully analyzed according to mortality, neurological course and symptoms, midbrain lesions and final outcome. The results demonstrate that dexamethasone, particularly given in high doses, reduces mortality and improves the neurological course. The steroid treatment seems to improve chances as well as quality of survival. Apart from the dose, timing of administration is of great importance.
