Some like it cold: the glossiphoniid parasites of the Sicilian endemic pond turtle Emys trinacris (Testudines, Emydidae), an example of ‘parasite ine…

2016

The freshwater turtles of the genus Emys and some leech species of the family Glossiphoniidae are the only Palaearctic representatives of primarily Nearctic taxa, which jointly colonized Eurasia and the Maghreb during the Miocene. The strict trophic relationships occurring between the glossiphoniid parasite leech Placobdella costata and its host, the emydid Emys orbicularis, make them a prime example of host–parasite cophylogenetic evolution. In the light of the discovery of the Sicilian cryptic endemic species Emys trinacris, which is the sister species to the widespread Palaearctic E. orbicularis, the possible cophylogenetic divergence of the turtle hosts and their leech parasites was inv…

Recombinant hirudin as a periprocedural antithrombotic in coronary angioplasty for unstable angina pectoris

1996

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is often complicated by thrombotic abrupt vessel closure in patients with unstable angina pectoris. The present multicentre trial was performed to determine the feasibility of two-dose regimens of recombinant hirudin (r-hirudin) compared to standard heparin in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty for unstable angina, and to investigate the effects of the different treatment regimen on markers of coagulation activation. At five participating centres, 61 patients were randomly enrolled in one of two sequential groups of r-hirudin (group 1: 0.3 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus, 0.12 mg.kg-1.h-1 i.v. infusion; 21 patients; group 2: 0.5 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus, 0.…

Prothrombinase-Induced Clotting Time Assay for Determination of the Anticoagulant Effects of Unfractionated and Low-Molecular-Weight Heparins, Fondap…

2008

The prothrombinase-induced clotting time assay (PiCT, Pentapharm, Basel, Switzerland) is a clotting assay sensitive to factor Xa and factor IIa inhibitors. It is based on the addition of factor Xa and snake venom RVV-V (Russell viper venom factor V activator) specifically activating factor V and phospholipids to platelet-poor plasma. Following an incubation time, the mixture is recalcified and the clotting time is determined. An almost linear dose-response and high sensitivity of the assay for unfractionated heparin (UFH), low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs), r-hirudin, and argatroban was found. Fondaparinux showed a nonlinear dose-response. By using ex vivo samples, the following Pearson…

Evaluation of an automated chromogenic substrate assay for the rapid determination of hirudin in plasma.

1995

Abstract A fully mechanized chromogenic substrate assay method for the rapid and specific determination of recombinant hirudin (r-hirudin) in citrated plasma on clinical chemistry analyzers (Hitachi 911 and Cobas Mira) is described. In a first step, 12 μl sample volume is mixed with the chromogenic substrate. Due to the almost immediate action of hirudin the inhibitory reaction and the cleavage of the substrate is started simultaneously when bovine thrombin is added in excess. This excludes interferences by antithrombin III or heparin cofactor II. The change in absorbance/min is recorded at 405 nm. The measuring range is about 0.2 – 4.0 mg/l r-hirudin on both analyzers. Precision is charact…

Extensive sampling sheds light on species-level diversity in Palearctic Placobdella (Annelida: Clitellata: Glossiphoniiformes)

2022

The bloodfeeding leech genus Placobdella is dominated by North American diversity, with only a single nominal species known from Central America and one from the Palearctic region. This is likely due to considerable underestimation of Palearctic biodiversity, but investigations into potential hidden diversity are lacking. To shed light on this, the present study introduces new data for specimens initially identified as Placobdella costata from Ukraine (close to the type locality), Italy, Germany, Latvia, Montenegro, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, and Algeria, and uses both nuclear (Internal Transcribed Spacer [ITS] region) and mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I …

Very highly prevalent Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus infection of wild boar Sus scrofa in Khuzestan province, south-western Iran

2006

Abstract An epidemiological and pathological study of Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus infection in a total of 50 wild boars Sus scrofa attila from cane sugar fields of Iranian Khuzestan was performed. The total prevalence of 64.0 % detected is the highest hitherto known by this acanthocephalan species in wild boars and may reflect a very high contamination of the farm lands studied as the consequence of the crowding of the wild boar population in cane sugar fields. Observations prove that this species is a wild boar gut wall perforating acanthocephalan. High burdens may become so pathogenic for the host individual as to be responsible for its elimination from the population. Thus, this aca…
