Immunophenotypical comparison of Gaucher's and pseudo-Gaucher cells.

An immunohistochemical study on bone marrow biopsies and spleens of patients with Gaucher's disease and chronic myeloid leukemia was performed to investigate the immunophenotype of Gaucher's cells and pseudo-Gaucher cells. A panel of antibodies was used which were reactive on paraffin-embedded tissues and directed against different hematopoietic lineage cells. Gaucher's cells and pseudo-Gaucher cells expressed a very similar immunophenotype and displayed an intense reaction for the monocytic antibodies tested, thus confirming their common origin and that they belong to the same system. Several studies report a higher rate of papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC) in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT), indicating a possible correlation between the two diseases. We studied a group of 89 subjects undergoing surgery for thyroid carcinomas compared with a control group of 89 subjects operated on for normofunctioning goiter, and a second group of 47 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for HT. Association with HT was found in 19 of the 71 PTC subjects (26.7%) and in 8 goiter patients (8.9%), which was a significant difference ( P < 0.02). Summary Amyloid-containing islets of Langerhans from the pancreas of 75 diabetics and one case of an amyloid-containing insulinoma were investigated. By light and electron microscopy, amyloid deposits were observed between the B cells and adjacent capillaries. The cytoplasm of B cells and extracellular amyloid display immunohistological binding of anti-insulin antibody. Correspondingly, ferritin-labeled anti-insulin antibody was found by electron microscopy on and between the amyloid fibrils. In this prospective study, we investigated possible changes in the innervation of the appendix under different pathological conditions and correlated histological findings with clinical observation.
