When did biopolitics begin? : Actuality and potentiality in historical events

The article addresses the ongoing debate about the origins of biopolitics. While Foucault’s analysis of biopolitics approached it as a modern rationality of government, Agamben’s Homo Sacer series presented biopolitics as having a longer provenance, dating back to the antiquity. These polar positions are not mutually exclusive but coexist in these and other theories of biopolitics, which approach its object as both modern and ancient, having its chronological origin in the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries yet also possessing a prehistory of precursors. This paper contributes to process-oriented international business research by showing how three distinct historical approaches can enrich theoretical understanding concerning temporality in firm de-internationalization. First, we show how comparative historical analysis unleashes the causal structure of the process and provides explanatory understanding of the temporal grounding of the mechanisms driving the process. Representation and retrieval of uncertain temporal information in museum databases

An implementation-oriented model to represent uncertain temporal information in databases is proposed. Temporal information is presented to the user as anchored time intervals with optional beginning and end dates. The model accounts for both instants and intervals, and can be applied to uncertain dates by leaving days and months optional, or by using symbolic constraints that present additional time granularities. The model is defined using conventional relational database structures to support ease of deployment and integration to legacy systems with efficient query capabilities. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelen terveyssisar Tytti Huotarin tekemää työtä pienessä lappilaisessa Pelkosenniemen kunnassa 1930-luvun lopulta 1960-luvun alkuun saakka. Huotari on isoäitini ja hän kirjoitti vuosia työuransa jälkeen muistelmat, joissa hän paneutuu kuvaamaan tekemäänsä työtä ja siihen vaikuttaneita olosuhteita. Terveydenhoitolehdessä, joka oli ensimmäisen suurelle yleisölle suunnattu suomenkielinen terveysvalistuslehti, otettiin kantaa työn ja hyvinvoinnin, tai tarkemmin sanottuna, hyvän ja onnellisen elämän väliseen suhteeseen. Lähtökohtana oli, että työ oli kutsumus, jonka toteuttaminen lisäsi hyvinvointia. Joutilaisuus oli puolestaan terveydelle haitaksi.
