The file on operation “Priboi”: A re-assessment of the mass deportations of 1949

Abstract Using information from documents found in the Russian State Military Archives, this article discusses the organization and execution of the Soviet mass deportations from the Baltic States in March 1949 — code-named Operation “Priboi” by the USSR MVD. These findings are presented for the first time in English, in the context both of established historiographical interpretations and recent literature on the deportations. The aim is to encourage a scholarly reassessment of Operation “Priboi” as a crime against humanity perpetrated by the Soviet occupation regime, but supported by indigenous collaborators to a far greater degree than previously assumed.

Modern scholarship seems to undervalue medieval commentaries on historical writings. This article intends to bring this phenomenon to scholars’ attention by providing a preliminary overview of the forms and subjects of such commentaries. It examines various types of evidence including not only a few commentaries proper (Nicolas Trevet’s on Livy and John of Dąbrówka’s on Vincent of Cracow), but also different apparatus consisting of more or less systematic interlinear and marginal glosses and commentary-like additions to vernacular translations, mostly of Italian and French origin. The purpose of this article is to investigate important research on the history of Scandinavian tourism conducted between the 1980s and the present. More specifically, it deals with research on summer and seaside tourism history in the Skagerrak–Kattegat and some parts of the North Sea region (southeastern Norway, Bohuslan in southwestern Sweden, and Jutland in western Denmark) from the late 1800s through the twentieth century. Although the publications chosen for this historiographical analysis are primarily anthologies and articles in scholarly reports, some monographs have been included as well. The study examines the critical point of view and research methodology that was applied by Francisco Ruiz Ramon (1930-2015) to analyze Spanish Theater, from its excellent Historia del teatro espanol (1967) to his latest research focused on Pedro Calderon de la Barca (1600-1681) and, especially, in its review as a contemporary classic in the history of European theater. To do it, the study pays particular attention to Ruiz Ramon’s biographical and academic circumstances and the critical currents that inspired its «Calderon reading» model, which contributed decisively in the renewal of Golden Age Theather historiography

Go-betweens, revisited: a historiographical proposal through the trial of an indefinable man (sixteenth century)

AbstractThis article studies the trial of Francisco Mariano, suspected of participation in a conspiracy linking Algeria, Istanbul and the Moriscos in Spain at the beginning of the Alpujarras revolt (1568–1571) and just before the battle of Lepanto. In doing so, it engages with how historians have used the notion of the “go-between,” and proposes a broader definition of the term. Extending the term to a wider range of social actors reveals the fluid mobility of the Early Modern Mediterranean spaces, in contrast to an interpretation of a world constrained by cultural and international borders.
