RESIDUAL STRESS ANALYSIS OF ORTHOTROPIC MATERIALS BY THE THROUGH-HOLE DRILLING METHOD
2007
The present study deals with the development and the application of the through-hole drilling method for the residual stress analysis in orthotropic materials. Through a systematic theoretical study of the stress field present on orthotropic plates with a circular hole, the relationships between the relaxed strains measured by a rectangular strain gauge rosette and the Cartesian components of the unknown residual stresses are obtained. The theoretical formulas of each influence coefficient allow the user an easy application of the method to the analysis of uniform-residual stresses on a generic homogeneous orthotropic material. Furthermore, to extend the method to the analysis of the residu…
Optimal calculation steps for the evaluation of residual stress by the incremental hole-drilling method
1999
The integral method is a suitable calculation procedure for the determination of nonuniform residual stresses by semidestructive mechanical methods such as the hole-drilling method and the ring-core method. However, the high sensitivity to strain measurement errors due to the ill conditioning of the equations has hindered its practical use. the analysis of the influence of the strain measurment error on the computed stresses carried out in the present work has showed that, given both maximum hole depth and number of total steps, the error sensitivity depends on the particular depth increment distribution used. By means of the matrix formulation, the depth increment distribution that optimiz…
Investigating the effect of residual stress on hydrogen cracking in multi-pass robotic welding through process compatible non-destructive testing
2021
Abstract In this paper, the effect of Welding Residual Stress (WRS) on the size and morphology of hydrogen-induced cracks (HIC) is studied. Four samples were manufactured using a 6-axis welding robot and in two separate batches. The difference between the two batches was the clamping system used, which resulted in different amounts of welding deformation and WRS. The hydrogen cracks were intentionally manufactured in the samples using a localised water-quenching method, where water was sprayed over a specific weld pass in a predetermined position. The Phased-Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) system was implemented during the welding process (high-temperature in-process method), to detect the …
Dependence between aging treatments and residual stresses on composite laminate
2006
International audience; The objective of this paper is to study the influence of residual stresses due to fabrication conditions on the thermomechanical behavior of carbon/epoxy laminate structures (cross ply). These studied laminates have undergone various cycles of thermal aging. The addition of a post-cure cycle after the end of the initial cycle makes it possible to reduce the residual stresses level. The incremental hole-drilling method is used to measure the residual strain in the laminates. These measured strains and the numerical calibration coefficients obtained by the finite element method allow to calculating the residual stress distribution in composite depth. The obtained resul…
ERROR AND UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS OF THE RESIDUAL STRESSES COMPUTED BY USING THE HOLE DRILLING METHOD
2011
The hole-drilling method is one of the most used techniques for the experimental analysis of the residual stresses in mechanical components. For both through-thickness uniform and non-uniform residual stresses, its practical application is standardised by the ASTM E837-08. For uniform residual stresses, to which the present work deals with, the use of the method in accordance with the ASTM limitations, leads to results with a bias of about 10%. Unfortunately, although some experimental parameters can be frequently out of the corresponding standard limitation, the user does not have appropriate procedures to correct the obtained results which, in accordance with the ASTM standard, have to be…
Advances in Strain Gauge Measurement on Composite Materials
2010
Abstract: This article gives an overview on the application of strain gauge techniques to the analysis of the strains in composite materials. The orthotropic behaviour of the composite influences the performance of strain gauges that are calibrated for use on isotropic materials. The article considers therefore the typical topics of the strain gauge technology applied to composites with particular reference to the compensation of thermal output, the measurement of the coefficients of thermal expansion, the determination of the strain and stress state, the influence of the misalignment error, the reinforcement effect, the determination of the stress intensification factor, the analysis of r…
