Neolithic woodland in the north Mediterranean basin: A review on Olea europaea L.

The aim of this paper is to specify the natural distribution of Olea europaea L. during the Early Holocene in the Northern Mediterranean by means of the identification of wood charcoal remains of this species at prehistoric sites. For this purpose, we have reviewed the relevant literature and extracted the data in which Olea charcoal has been identified. We have taken into consideration the biogeographical and chrono-cultural contexts in which the species is present, its frequency of occurrence at different locations and the associated plant taxa with the aim of tracking the Holocene history of the oleaster. International audience; This study aims to evaluate the direct effects of anthropogenic deforestation on simulated climate at two contrasting periods in the Holocene, ∼ 6 and ∼ 0.2 k BP in Eu-rope. The accumulation of heavy metals and trace elements has been investigated in a well laminated sequence of Holocene and late Pleistocene lake sediments composed of diatomaceous gyttja, tuff and silt and clay sediments. Varve chronology of the annually deposited gyttja yielded a continuous high-resolution time sequence and allowed the absolute age dating of the sediment. Fluxes of elements remained largely uniform from the late Pleistocene into the Holocene. Higher trace element and heavy metal fluxes occur from 2322 to 862 VT years ago (VT: varve time, years before 1950) and reached their maxima in the uppermost sediments (<845 VT years ago). Abstract Many soils older than the Holocene have experienced several changes, and possess properties that may be due to the complex effect of several stages of soil development; these soils are called polygenetic. The intramontane Lauca Basin at the western margin of the northern Chilean Altiplano lies to the west of and is topographically isolated from the well-known Plio-Pleistocene lake system of fluvio-lacustrine origin that covers the Bolivian Altiplano from Lake Titicaca to the north for more than 800 km to the Salar de Uyuni in the south. The Lauca Basin is filled by a sequence of some 120 m of mainly upper Miocene to Pliocene elastic and volcaniclastic sediments of lacustrine and alluvial origin. Abstract A palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 963D (Sicily Channel) has been obtained on the basis of quantitative abundance fluctuations in the calcareous nannofossil assemblages. The studied hole is characterized by a very high sedimentary resolution and covers the last ca. 20 kyr. A new palaeoclimatic curve, based on the Gephyrocapsa muellerae/Upper Photic Zone (UPZ) group ratio, permitted the detection of the rapid climatic fluctuations that characterized the last deglaciation. A carved rock with geometric and/or abstract signs discovered at the Balma Guilanyà site has made possible the analysis of the artistic patterns developed after the end of the Upper Palaeolithic in the Iberian Mediterranean region. Archaeo-stratigraphic, chronometric and chrono-cultural attributes link this finding to the Mesolithic, probably during the tenth millennium cal BP. Graphic analysis and the comparison with different kinds of representations from this same area allows the evaluation of the problematic that surrounds the characterization of West Mediterranean Mesolithic art.

En este trabajo se discute nuestro enfoque de la modelización del paisaje para la cuenca del Serpis medio (costa mediterránea central de la Península Ibérica) durante el Holoceno. La secuencia arqueológica de estos valles está marcada por la aparición inicial del paquete neolítico alrededor del año 5700 a.C. Examinamos cómo los paisajes responden al modo de vida agrícola, tanto a corto como a largo plazo. Conceptos como el cambio, la adaptación y también la resiliencia proporcionan marcos conceptuales para comprender mejor la forma en que los seres humanos interactúan con su entorno.
