Rituales, descentramientos territoriales y niveles de identidad: La Semana Santa Marinera de Valencia

2011

The aim of this paper is to study how the processes of spatial and identity recomposition brought about by a globalized world affect traditional religious rituals, with particular reference to the Semana Santa Marinera processions in Valencia (Spain). Instead of the ritual giving rise to a single local identity, it can be seen that levels of local identity —while not disappearing— overlap more and more with increasingly vague new territorialities ranging from processional networks based on canon law to state-organized meetings. Media coverage of the ritual means that new virtual communities with no fixed territorial base are created, and the complexity of this phenomenon …

THE ROUTE OF THE HOLY GRAIL: FROM SAN JUAN DE LA PEÑA TO VALENCIA. THE STRUCTURING OF A TERRITORY BASED ON ORAL TRADITION

2018

The Route of the Holy Grail was presented FITUR 2017 (Madrid, January 2017) by the Agència Valenciana del Turisme. It involves structuring a routethat connects the communities of Aragon and Valencia by use of touristic description that encompasses history, art, rituals and oral traditions and which is based on the knowledge of what was known in the Middle Ages as the “search for the Grail”. In this article we wish to show the importance of the oral tradition that has been received and perpetuated through an object of fundamental importance: the Holy Chalice, safeguarded in the Cathedral of Valencia. In addition to presenting its history and verifying it as a tangible patrimonial asset, the …

Mechanical and electrophysiological effects of cromakalim on the human urinary bladder.

1994

The effects of cromakalim on spontaneous and induced mechanical activity of human detrusor muscle were investigated in vitro. Cromakalim produces a concentration-related decrease of spontaneous as well as carbachol- and K(+)-evoked contractions. This is the first study to utilize the patch clamp technique to elucidate the mechanism of action of cromakalim on human detrusor cells. Cromakalim hyperpolarizes the detrusor cells by increasing the net outward current which is most likely carried by potassium ions. In the human urinary bladder, this effect is mediated by a glibenclamide-sensitive potassium channel, as glibenclamide is able to diminish the relaxant effect of cromakalim and to preve…

Towards “global zero”: the role of the Holy See in the campaign on nuclear disarmament

2019

On 7 July 2017 at the UN headquarters in New York the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted, the first multilateral legally-binding instrument for nuclear disarmament negotiated in the last twenty years. The very signing of the Treaty must be seen as an extraordinary achievement because it represents a historic step in the seven decades long debate on nuclear weapons. One of the most significant achievements of the decade-long campaign is the engagement of civil society and non-state actors to such a degree that it was recognized through the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). The crucial supporter of the cam…

Nauka Addaja i legenda edeska o świętym Wizerunku

2017

Wśród acheiropitów szczególną pozycję ma Święty Mandylion związany z legendą edeską o królu Abgarze. Różne warianty tej legendy funkcjonują w kulturze chrześcijańskiego Wschodu dzięki kilku pismom apokryfiznym poświęconym działalności ewangelizacyjnej św. Judy Tadeusza. Opowiada ona o historii korespondencji Chrystusa i Abgara, cytuje trzy mowy Addaja (do dworu królewskiego, misyjną i do kleru), prezentuje także korespondencję A…

Tra Roma e Venezia. L’attività diplomatica di Carmine Nicola Caracciolo negli anni della Guerra di Successione Spagnola

2018

In recent decades, the studies on diplomacy in the modern age enjoyed renewed interest. While entering into a consolidated historiographical tradition, the most recent research focused on highlighting not only the importance of diplomatic "practices", but also of the actors, in a twofold dimension, both public and private. The change in the point of observation, from the institutions to those acting within institutions, allowed to deepen the specifics of the experiences, to read the activities of individuals in relation not only to international political dynamics, but also to the management of power in most circumscribed local contexts. The present essay intends to insert itself into this …
