Identification of a discrete neuronal circuit that relays insulin signaling into the brain to regulate glucose homeostasis

Abstract26RFa (QRFP) is a biologically active peptide that regulates glucose homeostasis by acting as an incretin and by increasing insulin sensitivity at the periphery. 26RFa is also produced by a neuronal population localized in the hypothalamus. In the present study, we have investigated whether the 26RFa neurons may be involved in the hypothalamic regulation of glucose homeostasis. Our data indicate that 26RFa, i.c.v. injected, induces a robust antihyperglycemic effect associated with an increase of insulin production by the pancreatic islets. These two arterial territories share the major cardiovascular risk factors: smoking, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and diabetes. Current guidelines draw attention to other possible risk factors: homocysteine level, inflammation markers (e.g. high-sensitive C reactive-protein (CRP), interleukin 6) and chronic kidney disease (CKD.) The precise regulation of the Ca2+ concentration in the endoplasmic reticulum ([Ca2+]er) is important for protein processing and signal transduction. In the pancreatic beta-cell, dysregulation of [Ca2+]er may cause impaired insulin secretion. The Ca2+-sensitive photoprotein aequorin mutated to lower its Ca2+ affinity was stably expressed in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of rat insulinoma INS-1 cells. The steady state [Ca2+]er was 267 +/- 9 microM. Testicular cancer and viral infections: A systematic literature review and meta-analysis

In 1984, Newell and coworkers were the first to suggest that testicular cancer might have a viral etiology since it showed similar characteristics to Hodgkin's lymphoma. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate a possible association between viral infections (EBV, CMV, Parvovirus B19, HPV, and HIV) and testicular cancer. Articles published from 1985 through June 2010 were located from MEDLINE and EMBASE databases, 21 articles were finally included in the review. A pivotal study demonstrated significantly longer progression free survival with TEMS (175 mg weekly for 3 weeks followed by 75 mg weekly) in rel/refr MCL pts compared to investigatoŕs choice therapy (4.8 mo vs 1.9 mo; P = .0009). Fitz Hugh Curtis syndrome, also known as acute perihepatitis, associates pelvic inflammatory disease with the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae as the main causative pathogens.
 Symptomatology is a nonspecific one. Right upper quadrant pain, fever, nausea and vomiting are the most commonly encountered symptoms.
 Imaging data are also nonspecific and often show intra-abdominal changes with no particularity.

PURPOSE To investigate the clinical necessity of CT of the paranasal sinuses before bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. PATIENTS AND METHODS 80 patients with malignant disease underwent coronal CT of the paranasal sinuses prior to transplantation to exclude sinusitis. RESULTS CT revealed sinusitis requesting therapy in 17/80 patients (21%). Patients with leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were significantly more affected. Chronic sinusitis was found in two patients, mucosal swelling not requesting therapy in 22, and normal findings in 39.
