Nonmonotone Saturation Profiles for Hydrostatic Equilibrium in Homogeneous Porous Media

2012

Nonmonotonic saturation profiles (saturation overshoot) occur as travelling waves in gravity driven fingering. They seem important for preferential flow mechanisms and have found much attention recently. Here, we predict them even for hydrostatic equilibrium when all velocities vanish. We suggest that hysteresis suffices to explain the effect. Recently, the observation of nonmonotonicity of traveling wave solutions for saturation profiles during constant-flux infiltration experiments has highlighted the shortcomings of the traditional, seventy year old mathematical model for immiscible displacement in porous media. Several recent modifications have been proposed to explain these observation…

State-Feedback Stabilization for a Class of Stochastic Feedforward Nonlinear Time-Delay Systems

2013

We investigate the state-feedback stabilization problem for a class of stochastic feedforward nonlinear time-delay systems. By using the homogeneous domination approach and choosing an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, the delay-independent state-feedback controller is explicitly constructed such that the closed-loop system is globally asymptotically stable in probability. A simulation example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Upper and lower bounds for the vehicle-routing problem with private fleet and common carrier

2019

Abstract The vehicle-routing problem with private fleet and common carrier (VRPPC) extends the capacitated VRP by considering the option of outsourcing customers to subcontractors at a customer-dependent cost instead of serving them with the private fleet. The VRPPC has important applications in small package shipping and manufacturing, but despite its relevance, no exact solution approach has been introduced so far. We propose a branch-price-and-cut algorithm that is able to solve small to medium-sized instances and provides tight lower bounds for larger instances from the literature. In addition, we develop a large neighborhood search that shows a decent solution quality and competitive r…

Universal cocycles and the graph complex action on homogeneous Poisson brackets by diffeomorphisms

2020

The graph complex acts on the spaces of Poisson bi-vectors $P$ by infinitesimal symmetries. We prove that whenever a Poisson structure is homogeneous, i.e. $P = L_{\vec{V}}(P)$ w.r.t. the Lie derivative along some vector field $\vec{V}$, but not quadratic (the coefficients of $P$ are not degree-two homogeneous polynomials), and whenever its velocity bi-vector $\dot{P}=Q(P)$, also homogeneous w.r.t. $\vec{V}$ by $L_{\vec{V}}(Q)=n\cdot Q$ whenever $Q(P)= Or(\gamma)(P^{\otimes^n})$ is obtained using the orientation morphism $Or$ from a graph cocycle $\gamma$ on $n$ vertices and $2n-2$ edges in each term, then the $1$-vector $\vec{X}=Or(\gamma)(\vec{V}\otimes P^{\otimes^{n-1}})$ is a Poisson co…

Regularity properties of spheres in homogeneous groups

2015

We study left-invariant distances on Lie groups for which there exists a one-parameter family of homothetic automorphisms. The main examples are Carnot groups, in particular the Heisenberg group with the standard dilations. We are interested in criteria implying that, locally and away from the diagonal, the distance is Euclidean Lipschitz and, consequently, that the metric spheres are boundaries of Lipschitz domains in the Euclidean sense. In the first part of the paper, we consider geodesic distances. In this case, we actually prove the regularity of the distance in the more general context of sub-Finsler manifolds with no abnormal geodesics. Secondly, for general groups we identify an alg…

Construction of a fundamental set of solutions of an arbitrary homogeneous linear difference equation

2002

Abstract The detailed construction of a prefixed fundamental set of solutions of a linear homogeneous difference equation of any order with arbitrarily variable coefficients is reported. The usefulness of the resulting resolutive formula is illustrated by simple applications to the Hermite polynomials and to the Fibonacci sequence.

Inhibitoren der Korrosion (12). Nachweis der Bildung von Sekundärinhibitoren mit Hilfe der „Spezifischen Keim-Methode” von Karagounis

1972

Adaptation of the tropical hybrid Euphorbia×lomi Rauh to the exposure to the Mediterranean temperature extremes

2014

Abstract Poysean ( Euphorbia × lomi Rauh) has been introduced in the Mediterranean countries as an ornamental plant for indoor uses. When used outdoor, few information is available about its ability to withstand the Mediterranean temperature extremes. An experiment in an open stand was performed to evaluate poysean tolerance to the winter and summer temperatures of the thermo Mediterranean climate and its ornamental value for urban greening. Two genotypes of poysean (Nguen Muang, NM; and Soi Budsanin, SB) with similar bracts and flower colours were grown at either 2 or 3 plants per pot during 23 months. Number of flower racemes and leaves per plant and plant height were recorded monthly. Ov…
