From deterministic cellular automata to coupled map lattices

A general mathematical method is presented for the systematic construction of coupled map lattices (CMLs) out of deterministic cellular automata (CAs). The entire CA rule space is addressed by means of a universal map for CAs that we have recently derived and that is not dependent on any freely adjustable parameters. The CMLs thus constructed are termed real-valued deterministic cellular automata (RDCA) and encompass all deterministic CAs in rule space in the asymptotic limit $\kappa \to 0$ of a continuous parameter $\kappa$. Bayesian analysis of a Gibbs hard-core point pattern model with varying repulsion range

A Bayesian solution is suggested for the modelling of spatial point patterns with inhomogeneous hard-core radius using Gaussian processes in the regularization. The key observation is that a straightforward use of the finite Gibbs hard-core process likelihood together with a log-Gaussian random field prior does not work without penalisation towards high local packing density. Instead, a nearest neighbour Gibbs process likelihood is used. This approach to hard-core inhomogeneity is an alternative to the transformation inhomogeneous hard-core modelling. Thermodynamic approach to vortex production and diffusion in inhomogeneous superfluid turbulence

In this paper, we use a non-equilibrium thermodynamic framework to generalize a previous nonlocal model of counterflow superfluid turbulence to incorporate some new coupled terms which may be relevant in the evolution of inhomogeneous vortex tangles. The theory chooses as fundamental fields the energy density, the heat flux, and the averaged vortex line length per unit volume. The constitutive quantities are assumed to depend on the fundamental fields and on their first spatial derivatives, allowing us to describe thermal dissipation, vortex diffusion and a new contribution to vortex formation. Abstract One of the challenges in the simulation of crevice corrosion propagation is the rigorous treatment of non-aqueous species (gas or solids), since the appearance of a new phase in a crevice will automatically have an impact on its geometry. Metal-catalysed chemical reactions are often controlled by steric hindrance around the metal atom and it is rare that substituents far away of the reaction site could be differentiated during reaction, particularly if they are simple alkyl groups. Here we show that a gold catalyst is able to discriminate between linear carbon alkynes with 10 or 12 atoms in the chain during the oxidative homocoupling of alkynes: the former is fully reactive and the latter is practically unreactive. In this paper we report some results of the application of a new stochastic model applied to rainfall daily data. The Poisson models, characterized only by the expected rate of events (impulse occurrences, that is the mean number of impulses per unit time) and the assigned probability distribution of the phenomenon magnitude, do not take into consideration the datum regarding the duration of the occurrences, that is fundamental from a hydrological point of view. Abstract The paper deals with dynamic hysteretic oscillators without post-yielding hardening, called ideal elasto-plastic oscillators, subjected to white noise. They are characterized by the fact that they do not reach stationarity even though excited by stationary stochastic processes. A tool for a first analysis of architectural façades

Abstract This work presents a tool for analysing the figurative structure of architectural facades. The procedure begins by singling out the elementary shapes which make up the facade image; it detects and identifies them as “area objects”, even if present in combination in virtual or mental form and groups them into classes of equal objects. A second step is the analysis of the inner structure of the classes: equidistant, arithmetical and geometrical sequences, or alternate distances are distinguished. The procedure ends by singling out the symmetries which structure the facade image and displaying them, pointing out their implied hierarchy through a thickness differentiation.
Topical Depth and Writing Quality in Student EFL Compositions

ABSTRACT This study tests a method to describe the relationship between coherence and writing quality by using topical structure analysis. Originally the method was used to examine short professional texts written in the mother tongue (L1) but in the present study it is applied to short compositions written in English by students learning this foreign language (EFL). The analyses showed that what characterized good writers was the ability to develop the topics in their compositions more evenly across several topic levels than mid‐quality writers and especially the poor writers.
