Detection and elimination of UHI effects in long temperature records from villages – A case study from Tivissa, Spain

Abstract Since villages are usually regarded as part of the rural area, associated temperature records are assumed to be free of urban influences and might be used as unbiased reference data for city records. However, based on two years of data from a high temporal and spatial resolution sensor network, this study proves the development of a substantial UHI in the Spanish village Tivissa with intensities of >1.5 K in summer Tmin and Tmax compared to a rural reference. As a system for study, the isolated human polymorphonuclear leukocyte combines the advantages of a quasi-non-invasive preparation with a nearly complete complement of enzymes of carbohydrate and energy metabolism. However, small sample volumes and, in some cases, very low enzyme activities make high demands on sample processing, storage, and performance of continuous measurements, if the enzyme activities are to be measured with acceptable reproducibility. Optimization of conducting structures by using the homogenization method

Approximation and numerical realization of a class of optimization problems with control variables represented by coefficients of linear elliptic state equations is considered. Convergence analysis of well-posed problems is performed by using one- and two-level approximation strategies. The latter is utilized in an optimization layout problem for two conductive constituents, for which the necessary steps to transfer the well-posed problem into a computational form are described and some numerical experiments are given.

An enhanced grain-boundary framework for computational homogenization and micro-cracking simulations of polycrystalline materials

An enhanced three-dimensional (3D) framework for computational homogenization and intergranular cracking of polycrystalline materials is presented. The framework is aimed at reducing the computational cost of polycrystalline micro simulations, with an aim towards effective multiscale modelling. The scheme is based on a recently developed Voronoi cohesive-frictional grain-boundary formulation. Statistical analysis of the influence of forces on particles in EM driven recirculated turbulent flows

The present paper contains an analysis of the statistical distribution of forces affecting non-conducting particles dispersed in an EM induced recirculated flow in induction furnaces. The simulation is conducted adopting the LES-based Euler-Lagrange approach in the limit of dilute conditions (one-way coupling). It is done by means of a development of OpenFOAM software code. The used Lagrange equation for particle tracking includes drag, EM, buoyancy, lift, acceleration and added mass forces.
