Investigation of cuticular hydrocarbons from Bagrada hilaris genders by SPME/GC-MS

2007

The cuticular hydrocarbons of male and female Bagrada hilaris Burmeister (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were investigated, by headspace solid-phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Measurements were done with fiber coatings of different polarity after optimization of headspace volumes and extraction temperatures. This resulted in the use of polyacrylate fiber, 22-ml vial as the sample holder, and an extraction temperature of 150 degrees C. The analytical procedures allowed identification of 13 peaks, corresponding to a homologous series of n-alkanes (nC(17)-nC(29)). The hydrocarbon profiles of male and female B. hilaris were qualitatively equal, but marked sex-…

Ipsilateral corticomotor responses are confined to the homologous muscle following cross-education of muscular strength

2017

Cross-education of strength occurs when strength-training 1 limb increases the strength of the untrained limb and is restricted to the untrained homologous muscle. Cortical circuits located ipsilateral to the trained limb might be involved. We used transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to determine the corticomotor responses from the untrained homologous (biceps brachii) and nonhomologous (flexor carpi radialis) muscle following strength-training of the right elbow flexors. Motor evoked potentials were recorded from the untrained left biceps brachii and flexor carpi radialis during a submaximal contraction from 20 individuals (10 women, 10 men; aged 18–35 years; training group, n = 10; c…

Anastomotic Pseudoaneurysm Complicating Renal Transplantation: Treatment Options

2010

Introduction: Anastomotic pseudoaneurysm following renal transplantation is uncommon. Indications for repair, treatment options and outcomes remain controversial. Report: We present 6 renal transplant recipients with large anastomotic pseudoaneurysms. Five of the patients underwent open repair while one had a stent-grafting and delayed transplant nephrectomy for a ruptured pseudoaneurysm. A transplant nephrectomy was needed in all cases but one. Arterial reconstruction enabled limb salvage in all cases. One patient died of sepsis postoperatively. No patient presented late infection, failure of vascular reconstruction, nor pseudoaneurysm recurrence. Conclusions: Surgical excision of anastomo…

IVF/ET and GIFI in andrology

1988

Improvement in both in-vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET) and gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) procedures have led to a progressive extension of their use far beyond the indications represented by tubal problems. One of the most important examples of this is in the field of male infertility. Some researchers claim that IVF/ET is more efficient on the basis of the 'fertilization evidence', while others prefer the GIFT technique, stressing that as its results are clearly so much better that it should be used in all cases.

Sirolimus exposure and the occurrence of cytomegalovirus DNAemia after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

2018

Sirolimus appears to protect against cytomegalovirus (CMV) in organ transplant recipients. The effect of this drug in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation recipients remains unexplored. By means of multivariate continuous-time Markov model analyses, we identified 3 independent covariates that significantly impacted the risk of CMV DNAemia: recipient/donor CMV serostatus, tacrolimus exposure, and sirolimus exposure. CMV-seropositive recipients with CMV-seronegative donors had a significantly higher probability of having detectable CMV DNAemia. Increasing the tacrolimus trough concentration from 0 to 16 ng/mL increased the probability of patients having detectable CMV DNAemia by…

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Improve Motor Functions and Decrease Neurodegeneration in Ataxic Mice

2014

The main objective of this work is to demonstrate the feasibility of using bone marrow-derived stem cells in treating a neurodegenerative disorder such as Friedreich's ataxia. In this disease, the dorsal root ganglia of the spinal cord are the first to degenerate. Two groups of mice were injected intrathecally with mesenchymal stem cells isolated from either wild-type or Fxntm1Mkn/Tg(FXN)YG8Pook (YG8) mice. As a result, both groups presented improved motor skills compared to nontreated mice. Also, frataxin expression was increased in the dorsal root ganglia of the treated groups, along with lower expression of the apoptotic markers analyzed. Furthermore, the injected stem cells expressed th…

Decellularized tracheal prelamination implant: A proposed bilateral double organ technique

2021

Introduction In tracheal replacement transplantation, prelamination is a critical stage. Nowadays, the most widely used prelamination technique is the prethoracic fascia flap with lateral thoracic artery. We propose a flap based on the internal thoracic artery, which allows a relatively non-aggressive double organ implant, and we have tested its efficacy in decellularized tracheas. Material and methods Tracheas of albino New Zealand rabbits were decellularized following a protocol that uses detergents and cryogenization, sterilized with 1kGy gamma radiation and tutorized with a stent. Bilateral pedicled flaps made of pectoral fascia and a muscular component were harvested through a longitud…

Effects of systemically transplanted allogeneic bone marrow multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells on rats' recovery after experimental polytrauma.

2013

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate impact of transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM MMSCs) on recovery after polytrauma and bone fracture repair. Methods A total 27 Wistar-Kyoto rats were divided into three groups (n = 9): normal control (A), polytrauma (B), and polytrauma treated with BM MMSC transplantation (C). The experimental polytrauma model was made on male rats by causing multiple fractures and hemorrhagic shock. At 36 hours 9 days after surgery, nine rats received allogeneic BM MMSCs (1 × 10(6) cells per kilogram) intravenously. The day before operation and at Days 3 and 10 after surgery as well as at the end of the experiment, blood analysis was…

Management of nasal septal abscess in childhood: our experience.

2004

Summary A nasal septal abscess is usually the result of an infected hematoma of the septum. A secondary septal abscess may be the result of infections extending from any of the neighbouring tissues. The necrosis of septal cartilage may lead to nasal deformities and severe impairment of nasal patency and growth. Objectives: Assess if the drainage of the abscess and the immediate reconstruction of the destroyed nasal septum in the acute phase is the best treatment to prevent short- and long-term effect on nasal and midface growth. Methods: Three pediatric patients treated with drainage and immediate implantation of homologous bank cartilage prior to 1990 and four treated with mosaic plastic u…

Pregnancy after allogeneic uterus transplantation in the rat: perinatal outcome and growth trajectory

2014

Objective To investigate whether allogeneic uterine grafts in a rat model, with tacrolimus immunosuppression, can harbor pregnancies that result in offspring with normal postnatal growth. Design Experimental animal study. Setting University hospital. Animal(s) Lewis rats as uterus donors and Piebald-Virol-Glaxo rats as recipients. Intervention(s) Animals were allocated to one of the following three groups: allogeneic uterus transplantation with end-to-side anastomosis to the external iliac vessels and immunosuppression with tacrolimus (UT+Tac; n=10); sham surgery and immunosuppression with tacrolimus (Sham+Tac; n=10); or sham surgery (Sham; n=10). The rats were subsequently introduced to ma…
