Perfectionism and performance-related psychobiosocial states: The mediating role of competition appraisals.
2022
Using the multi-states (MuSt) theory as a framework, the present study focused on the individual (personality) antecedents of psychobiosocial states. Psychobiosocial states comprise emotional subjective experiences and their correlates (cognitive, motivational, volitional, bodily, motor-behavioural, operational, and communicative), that can be functional for performance (helpful) or dysfunctional (harmful). Specifically, we examined the relationships between two perfectionism dimensions (perfectionistic strivings and concerns) and functional and dysfunctional psychobiosocial states. The hypothesised mediational role of competitive appraisals was also tested. Participants (N = 271, 138 femal…
Effects of a home-based, exergaming intervention on physical function and pain after total knee replacement in older adults : a randomised controlled…
2023
ObjectivesTo investigate the effects of 4 months of customised, home-based exergaming on physical function and pain after total knee replacement (TKR) compared with standard exercise protocol.MethodsIn this non-blinded randomised controlled trial, 52 individuals aged 60–75 years undergoing TKR were randomised into an exergaming (intervention group, IG) or a standard exercising group (control group, CG). Primary outcomes were physical function and pain measured before and after (2 months and 4 months) surgery using the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Secondary outcomes included measures of the Visual Analogue Scale, 10m walking, short physical performance battery, iso…
Hemoglobin mass and performance responses during 4 weeks of normobaric “live high–train low and high”
2023
Purpose To investigate whether 4 weeks of normobaric “live high–train low and high” (LHTLH) causes different hematological, cardiorespiratory, and sea-level performance changes compared to living and training in normoxia during a preparation season. Methods Nineteen (13 women, 6 men) cross-country skiers competing at the national or international level completed a 28-day period (∼18 h day−1) of LHTLH in normobaric hypoxia of ∼2400 m (LHTLH group) including two 1 h low-intensity training sessions per week in normobaric hypoxia of 2500 m while continuing their normal training program in normoxia. Hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) was assessed using a carbon monoxide rebreathing method. Time to exhaust…
Performance-related physiological changes induced by one year of endurance training in young athletes
2023
IntroductionAlthough maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is generally recognized as the single best indicator of aerobic fitness in youth, interpretation of this parameter and the extent to which it can be improved by training remain controversial, as does the relative importance of VO2max for performance in comparison to other factors such as power production. Here, we examined the influence of endurance training on the VO2max, muscle power and sports-related performance of cross-country skiers attending a school specializing in sports, as well as potential relationships between any changes observed to one another and/or to perceived stress scale (Cohen) and certain blood parameters.MethodsOn t…
Ag44(EBT)26(TPP)4 Nanoclusters with Tailored Molecular and Electronic Structure
2021
Although atomically precise metalloid nanoclusters (NCs) of identical size with distinctly different molecular structures are highly desirable to understand the structural effects on the intriguing optical and photophysical properties, their synthesis remains highly challenging. Herein, we employed phosphine and thiol capping ligands featuring appropriate steric effects and synthesized a charge‐neutral Ag NC with the formula, Ag 44 (EBT) 26 (TPP) 4 (EBT: 2‐ethylbenzenethiolate; TPP: triphenylphosphine). The single‐crystal X‐ray structure reveals that this NC has a hollow metal core of Ag 12 @Ag 20 and a metal‐ligand shell of Ag 12 (EBT) 26 (TPP) 4 . The presence of mixed ligands and long V‐…
Effect of perceived organizational support on psychological capital - A study of IT industries in Indian framework
2015
In today's business environment, positive psychology and social exchange relationship have been attained great interest for research. Psychological Capital (PsyCap) is an individual's positive psychological state of development and is characterized by optimism, hope, resilience and self- efficacy. The commitment of employees directly depends on the commitment of organization towards their employees i.e. norms of reciprocity and social exchanges work between employee and organization. Perceived organizational support (POS) indicates the perception of employees that at what extent they are cared and valued by organization. The present study was conducted to identify the relationship between P…
Hamstring Graft Preparation for ACL Reconstruction
2022
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction represents one of the most common procedures in orthopedic surgery. It usually involves the harvest of both gracilis and semitendinosus tendons from the ipsilateral knee. Different methods of hamstring graft preparation have been proposed in recent years, to create an adequate graft diameter reducing morbidity linked to gracilis tendon harvesting procedure. More recently, the use of only 1 of the tendons (semitendinosus) in a tripled or quadrupled arrangement has been described, especially in an all-inside type of reconstruction. Having a thicker tendon with a quadrupled semitendinosus (ST), instead of double gracilis and ST enables to have a …
High-Frequency and Ultra-High Frequency Ultrasound: Musculoskeletal Imaging up to 70 MHz
2020
AbstractMusculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound has well-established advantages, able to investigate very small structures with high resolution and a quick and real-time dynamic evaluation with the possibility of contralateral comparison. Thus ultrasound has kept its own almost exclusive fields of application in daily clinical practice, and it is considered the first-level imaging technique to assess tendons, bursae, and capsuloligamentous structures of small peripheral joints as well as peripheral nerves. Up to now, however, clinical MSK ultrasound imaging could not go beyond the first 1 to 2 cm under the skin, using high-frequency probes up to 18 to 20 MHz with spatial resolution just below mill…
Thermo-Mechanical Behaviour of Flax-Fibre Reinforced Epoxy Laminates for Industrial Applications
2015
The present work describes the experimental mechanical characterisation of a natural flax fibre reinforced epoxy polymer composite. A commercial plain woven quasi-unidirectional flax fabric with spun-twisted yarns is employed in particular, as well as unidirectional composite panels manufactured with three techniques: hand-lay-up, vacuum bagging and resin infusion. The stiffness and strength behaviours are investigated under both monotonic and low-cycle fatigue loadings. The analysed material has, in particular, shown a typical bilinear behaviour under pure traction, with a knee yield point occurring at a rather low stress value, after which the material tensile stiffness is significantly r…
Physical education teacher educators’ views regarding the purpose(s) of school physical education
2015
The aim of this paper was to gain an understanding of the views of a group of physical education teacher educators on the purpose(s) of school physical education and whether, how and why these views have changed over time. Semi-structured individual interviews were carried out with thirteen physical education teacher educators; a fourteenth participant responded to interview questions in writing. Participants were based in seven countries: Belgium, Finland, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland and the USA. A relative consensus on the overarching purpose of physical education was evident, centred on physical education preparing young people for a lifetime of physical activity. The fram…
