Is the French mobile phone cartel really a cartel?

2009

International audience; France Telecom (FT), SFR and Bouygues Telecom (BT) have been fined by France's Conseil de la Concurrence (CC) for organizing a mobile phone cartel with stable market shares (one-half, one-third and one-sixth, respectively) and for directly exchanging commercial information. While not contesting the legal decision, it is argued here that the economic reasoning is flawed. (1) As the CC made much of the firms' stable market shares, we have first followed this line of reasoning by considering that the market shares are quotas under uniform costs. Even if there is a general incentive to form a monopolistic cartel, BT was too small for it to be worth its while to join it; it i…

Criterios y sistemas de promoción profesional y ascensos y no discriminación por razón de género

2021

The legal guarantees to protect workers’ right to professional promotion and/or advancement in their profesional careers without suffering gender discrimination is a highly important issue in order to achieve an effective substantive equality between women and men in the labour relations field. To eradicate or, at least, considerably reduce the observed horizontal and vertical segregation in our labour market today, it is necessary to identify key factors such as those preventing female workers from professional promotion or, at least, those making their promotion more difficult than in the case of their male colleagues. The aim of this paper/report is to point out the main key factors that…

Influence of the concentration of oxygen on the swimming path of Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera)

1993

Brachionus plicatilis females were maintained for > 24 hours in water where the concentration of oxygen was precisely controlled (spherical flasks with ≥ 6 mg 1−1 or < 0.5 mg 1−1; food = dead Tetraselmis sp.). Each female was randomly taken from one flask and quickly placed in an observation chamber containing the same experimental conditions. The swimming path was videotaped (5 minutes); then the size of the female was measured. The tape was analyzed by automatic tracking (25 x, y coordinates of the center of the animal, in a 512 × 512 pixels space). The swimming path was analyzed for ~45 females in both treatments. The speed (mm s−1 body length−1) was calculated for all trajectories, or o…

Modeling Atmospheric Turbulence via Rapid Distortion Theory: Spectral Tensor of Velocity and Buoyancy

2017

Abstract A spectral tensor model is presented for turbulent fluctuations of wind velocity components and temperature, assuming uniform vertical gradients in mean temperature and mean wind speed. The model is built upon rapid distortion theory (RDT) following studies by Mann and by Hanazaki and Hunt, using the eddy lifetime parameterization of Mann to make the model stationary. The buoyant spectral tensor model is driven via five parameters: the viscous dissipation rate ε, length scale of energy-containing eddies L, a turbulence anisotropy parameter , gradient Richardson number (Ri) representing the local atmospheric stability, and the rate of destruction of temperature variance . Model outp…

Hierarchical fuzzy/Lyapunov control for horizontal plane trajectory tracking of underactuated AUV

2010

A new hierarchical closed loop fuzzy control system for horizontal plane trajectory tracking of underactuated Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) is presented. A model for the AUV is formulated introducing a polar coordinates transformation for the velocities in the body fixed frame. It is employed to control the unactuated sway direction, the longitudinal position and the yaw by using the surge force and the yaw torque only. The highest level control is developed by employing a fuzzy inference system for obtaining the guidance control laws. The properties of the fuzzy system ensure forward surge velocity, fast convergence and Lyapunov's stability of the motion errors. A new low level kine…

Tomographic reconstruction reveals the morphology of a unique cellular organelle, the aggregated macrotubules (Macrotubuli aggregati) of human retina…

2014

Abstract Horizontal cells of the human retina contain unique tubular organelles that have a diameter which is about 10 times larger than that of microtubules (∼230 nm). These macrotubuli in most cases form regular aggregates. Therefore we propose to introduce them as Macrotubuli aggregati in the Terminologia histologica. Tomographic investigation of the structures revealed that the walls of the tubules most probably consist of intermediate filaments running nearly parallel to each other and show somewhat regularly attached ribosomes on their inner and also outer surface. About 2% of the organelles exhibit double- to multiple layered walls and less than 1% resemble large scrolls. The tubules…

Horizontal transmission of streptococcus mutans in schoolchildren

2011

Objetive: The aim of this study was to analyze possible horizontal transmission patterns of S. mutans among 6-7-yr-old schoolchildren from the same class, identifying genotypes and their diversity and relationship with caries disease status. Study Design: Caries indexes and saliva mutans streptococci and lactobacilli counts were recorded in 42 schoolchildren. Mutans streptococci colonies were identified by means of biochemical tests and all S. mutans strains were genotyped by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction. A child was considered free of S. mutans when it could not be isolated in 3 samples at 1-week intervals. Results: S. mutans was isolated in 30 schoolchildren: 20 having one…

Coexistence of three microsporidia parasites in populations of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeseli: evidence for vertical transmission and posit…

2004

We investigated the prevalence, transmission mode and fitness effects of infections by obligatory intracellular, microsporidian parasites in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus roeseli. We found three different microsporidia species in this host, all using transovarial (vertical) transmission. All three coexist at different prevalences in two host populations, but bi-infected individuals were rarely found, suggesting no (or very little) horizontal transmission. It is predicted that vertically-transmitted parasites may exhibit sex-specific virulence in their hosts, or they may have either positive or neutral effects on host fitness. All three species differed in their transmission efficiency an…

Does the centre of mass remain stable during complex human postural equilibrium tasks in weightlessness?

2001

In normal gravity conditions the execution of voluntary movement involves the displacement of body segments as well as the maintenance of a stable reference value for equilibrium control. It has been suggested that centre of mass (CM) projection within the supporting base (BS) is the stabilised reference for voluntary action, and is conserved in weightlessness. The purpose of this study was to determine if the CM is stabilised during whole body reaching movements executed in weightlessness. The reaching task was conducted by two cosmonauts aboard the Russian orbital station MIR, during the Franco-Russian mission ALTAIR, 1993. Movements of reflective markers were recorded using a videocamera…
