Spectral hole burning study of protoporphyrin IX substituted myoglobin.

Protoporphyrin IX substituted myoglobin reveals excellent hole burning properties. We investigated the frequency shift of persistent spectral holes under isotropic pressure conditions in a range from 0 to 2.4 MPa. In this range, the protein behaves like an elastic solid. The shift of the holes under pressure shows a remarkable frequency dependence from which the compressibility of the protein can be determined. The compressibility, in turn, allows for an estimation of the equilibrium volume fluctuations. Abstract Background Borna disease virus (BDV) can infect many vertebrate species, including humans. BDV infection may lead to meningoencephalomyelitis in animals. An association with human neuropsychiatric diseases has been reported, but the causal relationship between BDV and human disease remains unclear. Emergence in 2017-2019 of novel reassortant equine-like G3 rotavirus strains in Palermo, Sicily.

Rotavirus A (RVA) is a major etiologic agent of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. Hospital-based surveillance of viral gastroenteritis in paediatric population in Palermo (Italy) from 2017 onwards revealed a sharp increase in G3P[8] RVAs, accounting for 71% of all the RVAs detected in 2019. This pattern had not been observed before in Italy, with G3 RVA usually being detected at rates lower than 3%. Drug resistances in salmonella isolates from animal foods, Italy 1998–2000

We investigated the distribution of serotypes and patterns of drug resistance of 206 strains of salmonella isolated in southern Italy in the years 1998–2000 from raw food of animal origin, faeces of food animals and animal feed. To improve knowledge of mobile genetic elements carrying the resistance genes, some molecular features were also investigated within isolates resistant to three or more antibiotics. A high proportion of isolates, 52.2% and 37.7%, respectively, belonging to both Typhimurium and other serotypes of animal origin, proved to be multidrug resistant. In the last few years, a major goal of cardiac research has been to drive stem cell differentiation to replace damaged myocardium. Several research groups have attempted to differentiate potential cardiac stem cells (CSCs) using bi- or three-dimensional systems supplemented with growth factors or molecules acting as differentiating substances. Abstract The present work was carried out to evaluate the microbiological and physicochemical composition of salamis produced with the meat of beef, horse, wild boar and pork. Salami productions occurred under controlled laboratory conditions to exclude butchery environmental contaminations, without the addition of nitrate and nitrite. Magnetic Langmuir-Blodgett films of ferritin with different iron contents.

Magnetic Langmuir-Blodgett films of four ferritin derivatives with different iron contents containing 4220, 3062, 2200, and 1200 iron atoms, respectively, have been prepared by using the adsorption properties of a 6/1 mixed monolayer of methyl stearate (SME) and dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODA). The molecular organization of the mixed SME/DODA monolayer is strongly affected by the presence of the water-soluble protein in the subphase as shown by pi-A isotherms, BAM images, and imaging ellipsometry at the water-air interface. Dehydration and crystallization of trehalose and sucrose glasses containing carbonmonoxy-myoglobin

We report a study wherein we contemporarily measured 1) the dehydration process of trehalose or sucrose glasses embedding carbonmonoxy-myoglobin (MbCO) and 2) the evolution of the A substates in saccharide-coated MbCO. Our results indicate that microcrystallization processes, sizeably different in the two saccharides, take place during dehydration; moreover, the microcrystalline structure is maintained unless the dry samples are equilibrated with a humidity >/=75% (>/=60%) at 25 degrees C for the trehalose (sucrose) sample. “Water Association” Band in Saccharide Amorphous Matrices: Role of Residual Water on Bioprotection

Saccharides protect biostructures against adverse environmental conditions mainly by preventing large scale motions leading to unfolding. The efficiency of this molecular mechanism, which is higher in trehalose with respect to other sugars, strongly depends on hydration and sugar/protein ratio.
