The health of irregular and illegal immigrants: analysis of day-hospital admissions in a department of migration medicine

2011

It is difficult to trace full details of the path which irregular or illegal immigrants follow when seeking assistance in the network of the various hospital departments and health structures. The aim of this work was to analyze the health needs of immigrant people by reviewing the types of treatment given to them in the day-hospital of our Department of Migration Medicine. Our study analyzed day-hospital admissions between 2003 and 2009. The patient charts used for managing day-hospital activity were adopted in 2002 in conformity with the "OSI project". From these it is possible to draw up a scale picture of the distribution of each pathology in the immigrant population. The sample populat…

Noise Levels in an Urban Hospital and Workers' Subjective Responses

1995

Internal noise levels were measured in a 232-point grid that encompassed the main building of a major University Hospital in Valencia, Spain. Most noise equivalent sound levels that were obtained exceeded 55 dBA, and in some instances these sound levels were very high. Hospital workers' subjective responses to noise were evaluated with a self-answered questionnaire. A total of 295 workers volunteered to participate. Their answers revealed that the most important noise sources were located primarily inside the hospital. Noise levels were perceived to be sufficiently high to interfere with their work, and noise levels were also thought to affect patients' comfort and recovery. Most subjects t…

Type of retirement as a determinant of pre- and post-retirement hospital in-patient care use: a prospective study

2014

Background We examined prospectively the use of all-cause hospital in-patient care among public sector employees by using a 3-year pre- and post-retirement study window. Methods A total of 5269 participants of the Finnish Longitudinal Study of Municipal Employees had retired during January 1984 and July 2000. They had register-based data on retirement (non-disability retirement n = 3411, men 40%, and diagnose-specific disability retirement n = 1858, men 50%) and all-cause hospital in-patient admissions and discharges. Analyses were conducted using Generalized Estimating Equation model. Results The prevalence of hospital care use for non-disability retirees remained stable during the 6-year …

Socio-Demographic Characteristics and Sexual Behavioral Factors of Patients with Sexually Transmitted Infections Attending a Hospital in Southern Ita…

2021

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a serious global health problem. In Italy, data describing the vulnerability to STIs of specific sexual minorities and the influence of sociodemographic and behavioral determinants are limited, as most infections are not subject to mandatory notification. This retrospective study describes the sociodemographic profile and main sexual behaviors of patients attending a hospital in Palermo (Sicily, Italy) from January 2018 to March 2019 as predictors of STI risk. Patients were divided in subgroups: men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM), men-who-have-sex-with-women (MSW), bisexual men and females. Data were obtained through an anonymous questionnaire. Patien…

Are medical residents a "core group" for for future improvement of influenza vaccination coverage in health-care workers? A study among medical resid…

2011

Abstract Despite international recommendations, vaccination coverage among European healthcare workers, including physicians, is widely recognized as unsatisfactory. In order to plan tailored vaccination campaigns and increase future coverage, we investigated reasons for refusing vaccination and determinants associated with influenza vaccine uptake among young health care workers. A survey was carried out during September and October 2010 on medical residents attending post-graduate Schools of the Medical Faculty at the University of Palermo (Italy). Each participant completed an anonymous web-based questionnaire including items on demographic and occupational characteristics, knowledge, at…
