A general equilibrium analysis of climate change impacts on tourism
2006
This paper studies the economic implications of climate-change-induced variations in tourism demand, using a world CGE model. The model is first re-calibrated at some future years, obtaining hypothetical benchmark equilibria, which are subsequently perturbed by shocks, simulating the effects of climate change. We portray the impact of climate change on tourism by means of two sets of shocks, occurring simultaneously. The first set of shocks translate predicted variations in tourist flows into changes of consumption preferences for domestically produced goods. The second set reallocate income across world regions, simulating the effect of higher or lower tourists' expenditure. Our analysis h…
Computational issues in fitting joint frailty models for recurrent events with an associated terminal event.
2020
Abstract Background and objective: Joint frailty regression models are intended for the analysis of recurrent event times in the presence of informative drop-outs. They have been proposed for clinical trials to estimate the effect of some treatment on the rate of recurrent heart failure hospitalisations in the presence of drop-outs due to cardiovascular death. Whereas a R-software-package for fitting joint frailty models is available, some technical issues have to be solved in order to use SASⓇ 1 software, which is required in the regulatory environment of clinical trials. Methods: First, we demonstrate how to solve these issues by deriving proper likelihood-decompositions, in particular fo…
Impacts of Emotional Intelligence and Leadership on Motivation in the German Hotel Industry
2016
This paper aims to clarify the role of leadership and emotional intelligence in the motivational process of employees in the hotel industry. A review of relevant literature is done before a tentative model is presented to experts from the fields of leadership, emotional intelligence and the hotel industry to get their view on the constructed relations. After having been approved by the experts, the model has been tested with structuring equation modelling (SEM) based on a quantitative research among employees and leaders of the hotel industry in Germany. The positive relation among leadership and motivation as well as the moderating effect of emotional intelligence could be substantiated.
Rural-cultural excursion conceptualization: A local tourism marketing management model based on tourist destination image measurement
2009
Abstract Excursions to small, rural villages rich with historical heritage and architectural harmony are popular in Spain and other similar countries. This study presents a conceptualization and definition of this sort of tourism in rural-cultural destinations. In addition, it introduces a combination of variables that define the image of the destination, the characteristics of these types of trips, and characteristics of the rural-cultural tourist. One of the main results of this qualitative and quantitative empirical research is that it identifies a set of variables that span the cognitive and affective components of tourism. These cognitive–affective components mainly address the towns' …
Identificación de Urgencias por Asma y Enfermedad Pulmonar Obstructiva Crónica en el Servicio de Urgencias de un Hospital. Estudio de Concordancia
1999

Development of certified environmental management in hospital and outpatient haemodialysis units
2015
How Terrorism Changed the Ways of Interpreting Hospitality
2017
The consolidation of Thana-Capitalism doubtless affected the tourism industry, but also changed the ways in which the Other is conceived. Needless to say, anthropology should play a leading role in providing new theories to understand ‘cosmopolitanism’, and the position of this global dangerous Other in Europe. Discussing and engaging directly with Derrida as well as other scholars, this chapter focuses on how hospitality is dying. The end of hospitality represents a serious challenge of Europe simply because it was ‘the alma matter’ of its rationality and social trust. At times, terrorism targets ‘the exemplary centre of consumption’ to extortionate the developed nation-states, the surveil…
Demographic change, tourism expenditure and life cycle behavior
2015
Abstract The paper explores how demographic changes in human populations may impact on tourism decision-making of households over their life cycle. By means of hurdle models, the study focuses respectively on the decision to travel domestically or abroad and investigates if statistically significant differences exist as to the impact of age and cohort on the decision to travel and tourism expenditure. Using a vast dataset on Italian Household Expenditures over the period 1997–2007 the empirical results show that demographic aspects do have a strong effect on the tourism behaviour of families and that cohort and age effects act differently on the decision of households to make a trip and on …
Economic Impacts of Cultural Events on Local Economies: An Input—Output Analysis of the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival
2005
This paper examines the economic impacts of Finland's Kaustinen Folk Music Festival. The impacts are calculated on output, demand and wages, employment and on national and regional taxes. The results indicate, first, that the effects of the festival on output are about ₠1.7 million. Kaustinen can also be seen as a good investment for the local municipality, as regional tax revenues increased by about ₠65,600 in the year studied, while the annual subsidy was ₠40,365. From the perspective of the Keski-Pohjanmaa region as a whole, the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival has a substantial impact on regional incomes through subsidies (about one-fifth of the costs of the festival is offset by subsidie…
