Linear vs. non-linear classification of winners, drawers and losers at FIFA World Cup 2014

2017

Purpose: Tactical analyses to distinguish between football teams that were more or less successful have been conducted up to now only by means of linear methods (like discriminant analysis). Concer...

Co2 emissions of French shippers: The roles of delivery frequency and weight, mode choice, and distance

2014

In this article, the authors describe the effects of delivery frequency, mode choice, distance, and shipment weight on the CO₂ emissions of French shippers, taking advantage of a 2004 survey of French shippers (ECHO) which describes the characteristics of 3000 shippers, 10,000 shipments, and 20,000 transport chain legs. Once the energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of every shipment have been computed, they are divided by the corresponding number of ton-kilometers in order to find their carbon intensity (in grams of CO₂ per ton-kilometer). The authors then analyze the latter with respect to a number of selected shipment characteristics: shipment frequency and mode choice (planning choices),…

The Use of Cluster Analysis to Segment Clients of a Sport Center in Spain

2005

Abstract This research examines the motivation profiles of 218 consumers at a sport center in Valencia, Spain. We employed the Motivation in Sport Scale (MISS–Sport Center) with the following eight motives (factors): Positive Affect, Social Contact, Physical Exercise, Coping Strategy, Challenge, Body Image, Competition, and Entertainment. There were significant differences in consumers’ motives across gender, age, and marital status. We identified five motivation profiles using the eight motives of MISS–Sport Center: Non-Competitive Leisure-Oriented Exercisers, Practical Social Entertainers, Affective Users, Enthusiastic Sportspersons, and Passive Participants. There were differences in dem…

Predicting entrepreneurial intentions of sports sciences students: A cross-cultural approach

2021

Abstract The importance of entrepreneurship in the sports sector has risen recently. However, few studies analyze the determinants of entrepreneurial intentions with sport sciences students using a cross-cultural approach. This study aims to determine the entrepreneurial potential of sports sciences students and analyze the influence of national culture on sports sciences students' entrepreneurial intentions determinants. The sample is composed of 356 university students from Spain and Portugal. A multi-group analysis with PLS-SEM was performed to analyze the data. The results show that sports sciences students have favorable attitudes towards entrepreneurship and a supportive closed enviro…

Environmental Quality and Entrepreneurial Activity in Rural Tourism in Italy

2012

We estimate the relation between environmental quality and services in rural tourism in Italy. We use the average number of firms per region in 2003-07 to indicate entrepreneurial activity. We suggest that heterogeneity among administrative regions can be tied to environmental quality. Incorporated farms in rural tourism are relatively more common in regions with better environmental quality, and command higher average price from better quality in hospitality. Only 7% of entrepreneurial activity can be attributable to environmental quality. We conclude that rural tourism activity in Italy is not genuinely tied to environmental quality.

The importance of developing the entrepreneurial capacities in sport sciences university students

2017

ABSTRACTEntrepreneurship in the sports sector plays a key role in the increasing demand for sports professionals that possess entrepreneurial skills. Universities may help build the skills of sports science graduates by adopting educational policies to promote entrepreneurship. However, the capabilities that must be achieved to this end, and other factors, are unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand what perceived capabilities, internal factors (entrepreneurial courses), and external factors (environment) influence entrepreneurial intentions of students of physical activity and sport sciences. To achieve these goals, we analysed a sample of undergraduate and postgraduate …

The Role of Pluriactivity for Continuity and Survival in Family Farm Firms

2014

Our study focuses on family farm firms as an important and yet under-researched type of family firms. We explore the entrepreneurial growth behavior in the context of family farm firms by focusing on the role of pluriactivity. By integrating the literature of family business strategies, EO, and growth intentions, this study of 1618 Finnish family farms seeks to understand the idea of pluriactivity as a strategic orientation of family farm firms leading towards the growth and renewal of their prevailing and future domains. Our study revealed that pluriactivity is associated with growthorientation and perceived strengths of the family farm firms. We identified four types of growth groups (Est…

Assessing the conservation values and tourism threats in Barrientos Island, Antarctic Peninsula

2019

Antarctica has been witnessing continued growth of tourism, both in the overall visitation and in the diversity of itineraries and visitor activities. Expanding tourism presents unique business and educational opportunities, but it is also putting immense pressure on Antarctica's natural, and for the most parts, pristine environment. Understanding the effectiveness of different tourism management strategies and instruments, like the Visitor Site Guidelines adopted by the Antarctic Treaty, is fundamental to the sustainable management of Antarctic tourism. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of Visitor Site Guidelines and other tourism management actions in reducing impa…

Protecting emergency workers and armed forces from volatile toxic compounds: Applicability of reversible conductive polymer-based sensors in barrier …

2019

International audience; Barrier materials have wide applicability in both professional (military, medical, industrial) and non-professional(leisure and sports) fields. This paper focuses on the preparation of real conductive polymer (CP) sensors, for thestudy of the permeation of volatile toxic compounds through barrier materials. Use of such a CP sensor can helpimprove the quality of barrier materials used in protective clothing. Several types of platforms have beenmanufactured or purchased for use as comb sensors with different electrode dimensions, and a suitable methodof applying the detection layer of conductive polymers (polyaniline and poly-pyrrole) has been developed. Prepared senso…

Contamination of a hospital plumbing system by persister cells of a copper-tolerant high-risk clone of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

2019

Abstract Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is an important opportunistic pathogen that thrives best in the distal elements of plumbing and waste-water systems. Although nosocomial outbreaks of PA have been associated with water sources, the role of the plumbing system of healthcare premises as a reservoir for this pathogen is still unclear. Materials and methods We collected water samples from 12 technical areas, distant from any medical activity, in a teaching hospital in France once a week for 11 weeks. We used a method that resuscitates persister cells because of the nutrient-poor conditions and the presence of inhibitors (e.g. chlorine and copper ions). Briefly, water was sampled i…
