Efficient light-emitting electrochemical cells using small molecular weight, ionic, host-guest systems

This work has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MAT2014-55200). Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on fluorescent host-guest small molecules system are reported. The LECs show electroluminescence coming solely from the guest, with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.0%, which is very close to the theoretical maximum EQE (2.2%) for this particular system. This work demonstrates the possibility to obtain high efficiency devices employing low-cost materials, making host-guest systems a real alternative to more traditional semiconducting polymer or transition metal compounds. Stronger host-guest binding does not necessarily give brighter particles: a case study on polymeric AIEE-tunable and size-tunable supraspheres.

Supraspheres were prepared from a pillar[5]arene-based linear polymer (the host) and several multitopic guests. According to host-guest binding studies in nanosystems, the optical and structural properties (fluorescence capability, density, and particle size) of the nanoparticles were correlated not with the host-guest binding affinities, but with the relative fluorescence quantum yield.

The investigation of micro-vessel dimensions in 3D is currently problematic due to their complex structures and fine scale. Quantification of vascular parameters is important in several fields of biomedicine; including embryogenesis, wound healing, diseases characterized by uncontrolled angiogenesis (e.g. tumor growth and metastasis) and the development of implantable bio-materials where a functional vascular supply is critical to their successful integration into host tissue. Temporal patterns in immune responses to a range of microbial insults (Tenebrio molitor).

However, the temporal nature of these responses with respect to different immune insults is less well understood. This study investigated the magnitude and temporal variation in phenoloxidase and antimicrobial activity in the mealworm beetle Tenebrio molitor in response to a number of different synthetic and real immune elicitors. We found that antimicrobial activity in haemolymph increased rapidly during the first 48h after a challenge and was maintained at high levels for at least 14 days. The helminth community of the Iberian hare, Lepus granatensis (Lagomorpha: Leporidae), in the province of Granada, Spain

Abstract The helminth community of the Iberian hare, Lepus granatensis, in the southern Spanish province of Granada was analysed, thorough the study of 487 individuals shot by hunters between November 1998 and October 1999. Six helminth species were found: Mosgovoyia pectinata (Cestoda); Trichostrongylus retortaeformis, Nematodiroides zembrae, Nematodirus sp., Passalurus ambiguus and Micipsella numidica (Nematoda). N. zembrae and M. pectinata (62.4 % and 17.2 %, respectively) were the only component species found. The predominance of helminth species with a direct life cycle is noteworthy. Intestinal helminth communities of Podarcis bocagei and Podarcis carbonelli (Sauria: Lacertidae) in NW Portugal

Abstract A survey of gastrointestinal helminth communities of Podarcis bocagei and Podarcis carbonelli (Sauria: Lacertidae) from NW Portugal was conducted to determine the prevalence, intensity and diversity of intestinal parasites in these lizards. A few parasite species were found in both hosts, their prevalences, mean intensities and abundances of infection being low or very low. Low values of richness and abundance of parasite species were also found in the helminth infracommunities of individuals of both host species. These low values of parameters of infection and diversity are discussed and compared between both host species and among other Iberian lacertid lizards.

Transmission and Predictors of Burden of Lungworms of the Striped Dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the Western Mediterranean

Pseudaliid lungworms infect the lungs and sinuses of cetaceans. Information on the life cycle and epidemiology of pseudaliids is very scarce and mostly concerns species that infect coastal or inshore cetaceans. Available evidence indicates that some pseudaliids are vertically transmitted to the host, whereas others are acquired via infected prey. We documented pseudaliid infections in an oceanic cetacean, the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) in the western Mediterranean, and investigated the possibilities of vertical vs. horizontal transmission and the potential influence of host body size, sex, and season on infection levels. We investigated the pattern of helminth species diversity in woodmouse, Apodemus sylvaticus, on western Mediterranean islands. We first performed a survey of the helminth fauna of A. sylvaticus in Sicily. Despite the small sampling effort, parasite species richness in Sicily is large in comparison with parasite species richness on other Mediterranean islands. We tested the nestedness of helminth parasite species from a number of Mediterranean localities using data compiled from epidemiological surveys of the helminth species of A. sylvaticus. The helminth community of the Mediterranean mouse, Mus spretus, in a post-fire regenerated Mediterranean ecosystem

Abstract The helminth community of the Mediterranean mouse, Mus spretus, was analysed in a post-fire regenerated Mediterranean ecosystem. The study was carried out in the Spanish Natural Park of the Serra Calderona and comprised a 13 year period, from the 2nd to the 14th year after a wildfire. A total of 121 host individuals was analysed, 66 mice from the burned area and 55 from the non-burned area used as control.
