Organization of intensive cardiac care units in Europe: Results of a multinational survey

Background: The present survey aims to describe the intensive cardiac care unit organization and admission policies in Europe. Methods: A total of 228 hospitals (61% academic) from 27 countries participated in this survey. In addition to the organizational aspects of the intensive cardiac care units, including classification of the intensive cardiac care unit levels, data on the admission diagnoses were gathered from consecutive patients who were admitted during a two-day period. Admission policies were evaluated by comparing illness severity with the intensive cardiac care unit level. Nussbaum’s Central Capabilities refer to the elements of a well-lived life, and many adults who experience homelessness are deprived of these capabilities. The study aim was to investigate whether service users experience different homeless services as affording or constraining capabilities. The capabilities approach, a framework for understanding and measuring inequality, stipulates that equality is best understood as the freedom to do and be within a particular context. Homelessness has been referred to as a situation of ‘capabilities deprivation’, and the extent to which homeless services restore or enhance capabilities is of increasing interest. The study objective is the knowledge of the ways in which ‘the universe of the house is structured’ , in particular in a selected neighbourhood located on the northern edge of Favara - a town in the Sicilian hinterland, few kilometres far from Agrigento - characterized by self-building. The hope is that the investigated built-up heritage, together with public open spaces, can be recovered and enhanced by the community and local governance through strategic urban redevelopment actions not to lose a significant part of the city’s identity and history.
