Burgundy red wines: Representation of potential for aging

2009

Abstract This study was conducted to investigate wine professionals’ perception of aging potential of red wines. In the first experiment, 41 wine professionals assessed sixteen commercial Burgundy red wines via a binary categorization task, an aging potential rating task, and a hedonic rating task and an analytic sensory evaluation including an astringency and a bitterness rating task. The wines were also analyzed by High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography with a UV Detector (HPLC-UV) and their color was evaluated using Hue (H∗), Lightness (L∗) and Chroma (C∗) measurements. Results showed that the wines were split into two clusters on the basis of aging potential judgements indicating that the …

Las contiendas musicales de Apolo

2014

ABSTRACT: This article studies the contemporizing of the ethical and social connotations ascribed to string and wind instruments by the Grecolatin tradition that Hispanic Emblematics carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries. This is most evident in the depiction of the legend of Apollo in his respective musical competitions against Marsyas and Pan. This contemporizing of the legends allows us to perceive the political, social and religious dimensions that these musical contests acquire in the Hispanic World. KEYWORDS: Apollo, Marsyas, Pan, Midas, Cithern, Lyre, Aulos, Vihuela , Guitar. RESUMEN: Se examina la actualizacion llevada a cabo por la emblematica hispana de los siglos XVI y XVII …

Effects of cuticle structure and crystalline wax coverage on the coloration in young and old males of Calopteryx splendens and Calopteryx virgo

2010

Male secondary sexual characters, such as color patterns, are often investigated at the macroscale level. However, micro- and nanoscale levels of morphological investigations may reveal functional features responsible for a particular coloration, thus providing more information, e.g., about the condition dependence of male sexual characters. The aim of this paper was to investigate cuticle color and its structure in males of two congeneric damselfly species, Calopteryx splendens and Calopteryx virgo, and reveal possible color changes with age. According to spectrometer measurements, C. splendens males were bluer and had a greater saturation of blue in their abdomen than C. virgo males, whic…

Neuroprotection by erythropoietin administration after experimental traumatic brain injury.

2007

A large body of evidence indicates that the hormone erythropoietin (EPO) exerts beneficial effects in the central nervous system (CNS). To date, EPO's effect has been assessed in several experimental models of brain and spinal cord injury. This study was conducted to validate whether treatment with recombinant human EPO (rHuEPO) would limit the extent of injury following experimental TBI. Experimental TBI was induced in rats by a cryogenic injury model. rHuEPO or placebo was injected intraperitoneally immediately after the injury and then every 8 h until 2 or 14 days. Forty-eight hours after injury brain water content, an indicator of brain edema, was measured with the wet-dry method and bl…

New iPAD-based test for the detection of color vision deficiencies.

2018

Purpose: To develop and validate a new iPad-based color vision test (Optopad). Methods: A total of 341 student eyes were enrolled in a first comparative study between Optopad and the Isihara tests. In a second comparative study, Optopad vs. the Farnworth-Munsell test (FM 100H), a total of 66 adult eyes were included. Besides the agreement between tests, the correlation between FM 100H and Optopad outcomes were investigated. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict the total error score (TES) from contrast thresholds measured with the Optopad test. Results: The Ishihara and Optopad tests detected the same anomalous patients. Concerning FM 100H vs. Optopad, 10 subjects were diagnosed …

The effect of an advertisement’s colour on emotions evoked by attitude towards the ad

2007

Despite its importance surprisingly little is known about the influence of colour in advertising. This paper studies the effects of the three components of an ad’s colour (hue, saturation and lightness) on the emotions it evokes and on attitudes towards it. It is assumed that the influence of colour varies with the individual, whose optimal stimulation level (OSL) is considered a moderator variable. Analyses of covariance were conducted. The results show that OSL is a moderator variable accounting for the relations between hue and the pleasure evoked by the ad, and hue and the attitude towards the ad. Moreover, OSL proves to be a moderator for the relation between saturation and the same de…

Guiding properties of a photonic quasi-crystal fiber based on the thue-morse sequence

2015

We present a novel microstructured optical fiber having a quasi-periodic distribution of air holes based on the Thue–Morse sequence. The transverse section of these fibers is basically a two-dimensional photonic quasi-crystal that can also provide complete photonic bandgaps without being a perfect periodic structure. Like in the conventional photonic crystal fibers, if the quasi-periodicity is broken by decreasing the size of some air holes or by introducing an extra air hole, the modified holes become defects that localize and guide light along the fiber. The guidance is attributed to the inhibition of transverse radiation produced by the photonic quasi-crystal cladding. Dispersion curves …

MECASERMIN TREATMENT OF A CHILD WITH CONGENITAL HYPERINSULINISM LINKED TO INS-R MUTATION

2017

Objectives: Mecasermin is recombinant human insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) which is approved for the treatment of short stature in children with documented primary IGF1 deficiency. Leprechaunism, also known as Donohue syndrome, is a severe disease, secondary to a severe congenital insulin resistance, with prenatal and neonatal growth retardation, typical dysmorphic features, glycaemic dysregulation characterized by hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenism. These patients have a poor prognosis with death in the first year of life. Methods: We describe the case of a 3.5 years child, born at 35,4 weeks, with severe fetal growth restriction (weight 1149 gr; length: 38 cm; cranial circumferenc…
