Mainz/PSI Φ-factory design considerations

1991

Abstract Design considerations for a Φ-factory with a Luminosity of the order of 10 33 cm −2 s −1 lead to the concept of a multi-bunch round beam double storage ring with supercoducting solenoids for micro-beta focusing and beam rotation. Simulations of the beam-beam-interaction indicate, that significantly higher beam-beam-parameters may become possible with round beams. A rough draft design of a round beam Φ-factory is presented.

A multi-technique simultaneous approach for the design of a sailing yacht

2015

In this paper, most significant steps involved during the whole process of designing a sailing yacht are outlined. In particular, a novel simultaneous approach has been proposed to optimize the design process of a sailing yacht. Analytical resistance prediction models are simultaneously used with CAD systems and computational fluid dynamics tools to find, in the more effective way, the best solution for the chosen design conditions. As a general rule, in fact, once the target point has been decided, task of the designer is the definition of those systems of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces that are in equilibrium when the boat sails at its target. Unfortunately, a multi-purpose yacht doe…

On weighted inductive limits of spaces of Fréchet-valued continuous functions

1991

AbstractIn this article we continue the study of weighted inductive limits of spaces of Fréchet-valued continuous functions, concentrating on the problem of projective descriptions and the barrelledness of the corresponding “projective hull”. Our study is related to the work of Vogt on the study of pairs (E, F) of Fréchet spaces such that every continuous linear mapping from E into F is bounded and on the study of the functor Ext1 (E, F) for pairs (E, F) of Fréchet spaces.

Accuracy in Detecting Artificial Root Resorption in Panoramic Radiography versus Tomosynthetic Panoramic Radiographs.

2019

The aim of this study was to compare the detection accuracy of panoramic radiography (PAN) and tomosynthetically reconstructed panoramic radiography (TPAN) for the detection of artificial external root resorption in a multiobserver approach.Thirty-six teeth in 5 dry human mandibles were prepared with artificial root resorption by means of diamond bur defects (0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 mm). The samples were exposed in a digital panoramic radiographic unit in a predetermined appropriate position using a wax layer (6.25 mm thickness) as soft tissue scatter equivalent and a water-filled plastic bottle to mimic the absorption of the cervical spine. This resulted in 5 panoramic radiographs and 5 tomosynt…

A reverse engineering approach to measure the deformations of a sailing yacht

2016

In this work, a multidisciplinary experience, aimed to study the permanent deformations of the hull of a regatta sailing yacht is described. In particular, a procedure to compare two different surfaces of the hull of a small sailing yacht, designed and manufactured at the University of Palermo, has been developed. The first one represents the original CAD model while the second one has been obtained by means of a reverse engineering approach. The reverse engineering process was performed through an automatic close-range photogrammetry survey, that has allowed to obtain very accurate measures of the hull, and a 3D modelling step by the well-known 3D computer graphics software Rhinoceros. The…

Interactive roll stabilization comparative analysis for large yacht: gyroscope versus active fins

2020

The problem of the active stabilization of ship motions is particularly important in the case of pleasure boats or in any case of passenger ships, since the commercial value of the ship is directly related to the comfort of the load transported in this case “people”, considered as stresses induced on them by the vessel movements, with particular attention to roll, given the ship geometric characteristics. Naval architects developed trough the years different solutions to reduce the roll of the ship, and consequentially to increase the passengers comfort, and the development of this solutions followed the progress of technology. Active fins have been the most used, but now the gyroscope solu…

Archetypoids: A new approach to define representative archetypal data

2015

[EN] The new concept archetypoids is introduced. Archetypoid analysis represents each observation in a dataset as a mixture of actual observations in the dataset, which are pure type or archetypoids. Unlike archetype analysis, archetypoids are real observations, not a mixture of observations. This is relevant when existing archetypal observations are needed, rather than fictitious ones. An algorithm is proposed to find them and some of their theoretical properties are introduced. It is also shown how they can be obtained when only dissimilarities between observations are known (features are unavailable). Archetypoid analysis is illustrated in two design problems and several examples, compar…

Genericity of dimension drop on self-affine sets

2017

We prove that generically, for a self-affine set in $\mathbb{R}^d$, removing one of the affine maps which defines the set results in a strict reduction of the Hausdorff dimension. This gives a partial positive answer to a folklore open question.
