Schooling Effects and Earnings of French UniversityGraduates : School Quality Matters, but Choice ofDisciplines Matters More
2009
09022 - Actes sur CD-ROM; Our aim in this article is to study the relation between earnings of French universities graduates and some characteristics of their universities. We exploit data from the Céreq's "Génération 98" survey, enriched with information on university characteristics primarily from the ANETES (yearbook of French institutions of higher education). We employ multilevel modeling, enabling us to take advantage of the natural hierarchy in our separate datasets, and thus to identify, and even to measure potential effcts of institutional quality. Since we take into account many individual students characteristics, we are able to obtain an income hierarchy among the diffrent disci…
Human capital and RD Driven Growth: analyse for France at regional level on the long run
2012
At the root of the Lisbon goal, for Europe, is placed the awareness for advocating a close link between growth and dissemination of advanced knowledge and innovation, on the one hand, and raising in general endowments in human capital, on the other hand, as to have power over the development of non-specific skills and boost efficiency. Much work in literature also stressed the interest of the position concerning traditional activities in the geography of innovation and links, in the long term, between the spatial distribution of longestablished skills and knowledge creation. Following Jones, in this approach, for which contribution to R&D and innovation explains half of the increase in weal…
Capital humain et croissance : l'apport des enquêtes internationales sur les acquis des élèves
2006
The estimation of the relationship between education and economic growth is marked by contradictions. These contradictions underline the lack of precision characterising indicators of human capital. This paper constructs new indicators based on a pool of international surveys concerning pupil assessment. Thus, our new database, which includes 105 countries, makes it possible to confirm or not the positive relationship between education and growth. Taking into account the endogeneity of education, we measure a positive effect of qualitative indicators of human capital and the growth of countries between 1960 and 2000. The contribution of education to growth therefore appears significant,…
Low human capital accumulation traps among French NEETs: A Multidimensional and Fuzzy approach
2019
International audience; NEETs are generally considered as young people who cannot acquire human capital either through education, training or professional experience. The aim of this communication is to discuss this issue taking in to account the heterogeneity of human capital acquisition among young people. We use a multidimensional and fuzzy approach. The main advantage of this approach is that it makes it possible to construct an indicator that is similar to a membership function by including different deprivation dimensions. The data used come from the French National Survey of Youth Resources conducted by DREES/INSEE (5800 people aged 18 to 24). Our results show a strong heterogeneity …

Migracje absolwentów szkół wyższych a kształtowanie się kapitału ludzkiego w województwie opolskim
2019
Województwo opolskie to region silnie zdeterminowany demograficznie szczególnie procesami migracyjnymi o różnorodnych implikacjach społecznych i ekonomicznych.
The Individual-level Productivity Costs of Physical Inactivity
2023
Abstract Purpose: This study estimated the long-term individual-level productivity costs of physical inactivity. Methods: The data were drawn from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, to which the productivity cost variables (sick leaves and disability pensions) from Finnish registries were linked. Individuals (N = 6261) were categorized into physical activity groups based on their level of physical activity, which was measured in three ways: 1) self-reported leisure-time moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) at 46 yr old, 2) longitudinal self-reported leisure-time MVPA at 31–46 yr old, and 3) accelerometer-measured overall MVPA at 46 yr old. The human capital approach…
The emergence of intangible capital : human, social, and intellectual capital in nineteenth century British, French, and German economic thought
2016
Since the late 1950s the concept of human capital, understood as the stock of knowledge, skills, and abilities that determine individual productivity, has become one of the central tools with which economists explain both individual success and economic growth. During the latter half of the 20th century complementing concepts such as social capital, meaning the value of social networks and norms of reciprocity, and intangible capital, meaning the investments in knowledge and innovation generation, have emerged. The term intellectual capital is sometimes used as a major concept to bind different forms of intangible capital. This study focuses on the conceptual equivalents of these ideas in 1…
Patterns of inter- and intra-regional differences in human capital and earnings : Evidence from Finland and Sweden 1987–2015
2021
In this paper, we examine the long-term patterns of geographical disparities in human capital and income in Finland and Sweden over the period 1987–2015. Using nationwide longitudinal population register data, we analyze disparities at different spatial scales, between and within functional labor market regions determined by observed travel-to-work patterns. Contrary to the findings from many other developed economies indicating inter-regional divergence in per capita income, we find indications of inter-regional convergence in per capita earnings among the functional labor market regions in both countries after 2000. However, small, and peripheral regions have not recovered from the macroe…
