Conscious and unconscious identification of female anorectic patients in in-patient psychotherapy

2009

Women are up to ten times more likely to develop anorexia nervosa (AN) than men. Psychoanalytic explanations of this disparity generally emphasize female identification problems due to unresolved conflicts with maternal representations. Based on clinical observation, we identify a subtype of AN patients characterized, first, by consistent idealization of the father who needs the patient for the fulfilment of his own narcissistic needs and, second, by the patient's need to be idealized by the father due to suffering in connection with early emotional malnutrition on the part of the mother. To illustrate this hypothesis, we present the case of a well-educated young woman displaying unconsciou…

A local complexity based combination method for decision forests trained with high-dimensional data

2012

Accurate machine learning with high-dimensional data is affected by phenomena known as the “curse” of dimensionality. One of the main strategies explored in the last decade to deal with this problem is the use of multi-classifier systems. Several of such approaches are inspired by the Random Subspace Method for the construction of decision forests. Furthermore, other studies rely on estimations of the individual classifiers' competence, to enhance the combination in the multi-classifier and improve the accuracy. We propose a competence estimate which is based on local complexity measurements, to perform a weighted average combination of the decision forest. Experimental results show how thi…

A commentary on the Special Issue “Innovations in measuring and fostering mathematical modelling competencies”

2021

This is a commentary on the ESM 2021 Special Issue on Innovations in Measuring and Fostering Mathematical Modelling Competencies. We have grouped the ten studies into three themes: competencies, fostering, and measuring. The first theme and the papers therein provide a platform to discuss the cognitivist backgrounds to the different conceptualizations of mathematical modelling competencies, based on the modelling cycle. We suggest theoretical widening through a competence continuum and enriching of the modelling cycle with overarching, analytic dimensions for creativity, tool use, metacognition, and so forth. The second theme and the papers therein showcase innovative ideas on fostering an…

New media and perennial problems in foreign language learning and teaching

2015

The book concerns the ways in which the new media shape communication along with educational expectations and practices in foreign language classrooms. Although foreign language learners have cheap and easy access to information and ways of communication, they also wrestle with problems that have always accompanied language learning. The focus of the book is two-fold. On the one hand, the authors demonstrate how using social networks, videoconferencing, mobile phones, wikis, and computer-mediated interaction contributes to the development of language skills, negotiated interaction, autonomy, and intercultural competence. On the other, they discuss “old” issues pertaining to the role of voca…

BUSINESS CAPABILITIES AND HR KNOWLEDGE’ AS THE CRITICAL FACTOR OF DUE DILIGENCE IN PRE-ACQUISITION PHASE

2016

Previous theoretical research has argued that due diligence in the pre-acquisition phase is traditionally oriented towards legal and financial matters. However, in the innovation-driven market environment, where firms need to maintain competitive strength, business skills and knowledge play important roles. Despite this difference, the due diligence research continues in traditional areas, e.g., financial history, legal and commercial liabilities, and tax issues. Hence, the problem may arise in acquirers overpaying or mistakenly rejecting a target firm. There is a need for assessing ‘Business Capabilities and Human Resources Knowledge’ for due diligence in the pre-acquisition phase. Based o…

Blending Literature and Foreign Language Learning: Current Approaches

2013

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the place of literature in foreign language learning and teaching contexts, and to show reasons of using literary texts for the development of communicative competence, intercultural communicative competence, and for individual as well as social human growth. Although literature and language teaching had been following separate paths, currently a strong tendency emerges of integrating language and literature teaching across proficiency levels. This tendency results from the recognition of the roles that literacy, multiliteracies and multimodality play in the life of humans in the 21st century. Respected bodies such as the Council of Europe or Modern Lan…

Znawca języka czy człowiek komunikujący się? O strukturze kompetencji językowo-komunikacyjnej ucznia klas IV–VI szkoły podstawowej wpisanej w podstaw…

2019

The article aims to answer two questions: how the language instruction framework was inscribed into the 2017/2018 Polish language curriculum and what image of the linguistic and communicative competence results from this document. The research method is based on the assumption that these two questions can be answered by analysing the cognitive operators used in the description of specific requirements. The article analyses the operators found in the ‘language instruction’ section of the curriculum. Within the linguistic and communicative competence, the document distinguishes among metalinguistic, analytical, linguistic (including normative and grammar-lexical competences) and communicative…

Goals are Not Enough: Building Public Sector Capacity for Chronic Disease Prevention

2013

The rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) challenges the public health sector to develop, support and implement effective interventions to reduce this global epidemic. The United Nations has responded with a global action plan that includes goals and voluntary targets for the prevention and control of NCDs. However, setting goals is not enough. To achieve meaningful outcomes, governments must act and invest to improve key enabling capacities. Political and other public sector leadership at every jurisdictional level is needed to implement health-in-all-policies initiatives and to measure progress against set objectives, while technological and human resources for health should b…

The media competence as a challenge for educommunication : tools of evaluation

2014

Managerial Growth Challenges in Small Software Firms: A Multiple-Case Study of Growth-Oriented Enterprises

2010

Notwithstanding the importance of small software firms, research focusing on understanding the growth challenges faced by their management is close to non-existent. By taking a life-cycle approach and focusing on managerial challenges, the aim of this paper is to analyze the growth process of small software firms. After forming a synthesis of possible growth challenges from relevant literature, the results are reflected upon case software firms using thematic interviews and questionnaires. According to the analysis of four software firms, managing human resources represents the greatest challenge for software services firms. Additionally, other challenges stem from competition and sales-rel…
