My dissertation deals with the most important female figures of the Finnish national epic New Kalevala (1849): Aino, Louhi, Lemminkäinen’s mother and Marjatta. The epic was compiled by Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore. My reading leans on the intuitive night side of knowledge, which Lönnrot (1832) introduced as a counterpart to the day side of rational knowledge. To illustrate the logic of the night side of knowledge, I analyse Lönnrot as both a collector of oral folklore and a compiler of a work of epic poetry. Environmental citizenship provides a useful tool to conceptualize the relation between citizenship and the environment. Tutkielman teoriataustana toimivat kognitiivinen narratologia, zoonarrattologia sekä laajempi posthumanistinen viitekehys. The Padua-trained medical doctor Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514) of Nuremberg is today perhaps best known for his Liber Chronicarum, printed in Latin and German (Weltchronik) in 1493 with an ambitious programme of xylographies. Thanks to his well-spent study years in Padua (1463–1466), he also played an important role in the dissemination of Italian humanism north of the Alps, as witnessed, for example, by his important collection of inscriptions and Humanist texts. In his classic essay, philosopher Thomas Nagel (1975) argues that we are fundamentally unable to imagine what it is like to be a bat, because our senses and cognition are structured in a way that is uniquely human – whereas bats’ senses and cognition have a uniquely bat-like configuration. Children and monsters share a similar position in the world dominated by human adults: both are typically represented as animalized, alien creatures that are to be tamed, protected, abused, or repelled.
