Interdisziplinäre Grenzgänge bei Käte Hamburger: Zum Briefnachlass der Literaturwissenschaftlerin
2008
This article deals with the unpublished correspondence of the literary specialist Kate Hamburger (1896–1992), which is housed in the literary archive in Marbach, Germany. The correspondence of Hamburger, who is best known for her theoretical work The Logic of Literature, depicts the scholarly context as well as the personalities and public figures with whom she interchanged. The letters demonstrate that Kate Hamburger was widely admitted and acknowledged internationally, but at the same time reveal the problems she had to face as a scholar, female and Jewish, in the first half of the twentieth century. It was not until the end of the 1950s that her work, The Logic of Literature, was belated…
Humanist Neo-Latin Drama in France
2013
Neo-Latin humanist drama in France offers a fairly modest corpus of texts compared to the production in the rest of Europe. Moreover, humanist drama composed in Latin is not very well known; Latin plays, mostly written by teachers or students in colleges, have for a long time remained in the shadow of vernacular mystery plays, farces and moralities on the one hand, and, from the 1550s onwards, of the first tragedies and comedies written in French on the other. French dramatic writing in the sixteenth century is characterized first of all by the important place occupied by a theatre which was long called 'popular' and 'medieval', but which reached its full maturity between 1450 and 1550. The…
Study E. M. Remarque¿s novel All Quiet i…
‘It’s not a part of me, but it is what it is’: the struggle of becoming en-wheeled after spinal cord injury
2019
Many people who experience spinal cord injury become long-term wheelchair users. This article addresses the process of becoming en-wheeled through the case example of a disabled man called Patrick. An intrinsic case study informed by posthumanist developments was used. Within this design, Patrick and his manual wheelchair were the entangled participants of the inquiry.Interviews and fieldwork observation with Patrick were conducted. Qualitative data were analysed using the posthumanist notion of 'assemblages'.The results illuminate Patrick's struggle of negotiating a new embodied selfhood that includes the wheelchair. Patrick engaged in ableist rehabilitation after spinal cord injury to recu…
Smart drugs: de la terapia al transhumanismo
2018
ABSTRACT Enhancing human cognitive capacities is one of the central axes of transhumanist proposals. In recent decades, halfway between the actual and the possible, another way of approaching human mind enhancement has appeared: smart drugs —also known as cognitive enhancers or nootropics— psychopharmaceuticals that promise an improvement in cognition, memory, intelligence, attention, concentration... These drugs are currently used in the therapeutic field, but many think that the barriers between therapy and human enhancement are fading away. This paper presents three smart drugs —methylphenidate, modafinil and pyracetam— and reflects on the limits between therapy and enhancement, placing …

Ode laica per Chibok e Leah
2019
The volume contains two short poems by Nigerian Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka -- "No, He Said!", dedicated to Nelson Mandela, from the Author's 1988 well-known collection "Mandela's Earth and Other Poems" and the recent "Mandela Comes to Leah", written purposely for this volume -- and the Author's 2019 long epic poem "A Humanist Ode to Chibok, Leah" denouncing all forms of fundamentalism and fanaticism as opposed to secular humanism. Soyinka pays tribute to the girls abducted in Chibok and to 15 year-old Leah Sharibu, one of the 108 girls abducted in 2018 from Dapchi, comparing her firm refusal to renounce her faith to Nelson Mandela's refusal to compromise his moral stance on Apartheid while…
A lack of meaning?
2020
This article explores the ‘lack of meaning’ in contemporary society as a consequence of Western dualist thought paradigms and ontologies, via Gilles Deleuze’s concept of ‘reactive nihilism’ following the colloquial murder of God. The article then explores processual and new materialist approaches in the understanding of the lived and carnal self, arguing for immanent and senseful materiality as an ethical platform for religious, environmental, and societal solidarity for tomorrow. For the theoretical justification of the processual approach in understanding the enfleshed self, the article employs John Dupré’s processual approach in the philosophy of biology, as well as Astrida Neimani’s cri…
Economicism and Nihilism in the Eclipse of Humanism
2014
This article is based on the conviction that the major problems nowadays are not technical, but ethical, and are incumbent on homo qua homo. The origin of these problems is the advancement of economicism as a supreme interpretation of human and social reality, which means the primacy of the “market” and considering human beings in terms of what they have rather than what they are. Economicism emerges in “modernity” and assumes that everything that does not have market value is either devaluated or rejected. In consequence, the human being has been devaluated and has turned into a simple object of the market. “Postmodernity” mixes economicism and techno-scientificism (chrematistics and instr…
¿Un transhumanismo nietzscheano? Sobre la parcialidad del alegato
2020
