Sir William Osler is celebrated today not only for his contributions to the advancement of medical education, but also for the humanism he brought to the practice of medicine. In this work, the author studies the satires against the grammarian in Spanish literary texts of the first third of the 17th century, according to the idea of grammar developed by Nebrija and other humanists. Following the negative judgement made by many essay writers in the 16th century, Salas Barbadillo and Quevedo will repeat some specific motives of that criticism, such as the arrogance or the interest in minor features of the texts, compared to the allegedly profound knowledge seeked by theologicians and moral philosophers. Este teórico político ha planteado en algunas de sus obras una fuerte crítica no sólo del liberalismo, sino también de la idea de progreso, los proyectos políticos utópicos y el antropocentrismo. En primer lugar, quisiera esbozar una definición provisional de humanismo y analizar cómo reconstruye Gray este concepto. The Dutch humanist Hugo Grotius’ status as an important forerunner of the Enlightenment is well recognized, bolstered by his famous etiamsi daremus-dictum in the Prolegomena of De iure belli ac pacis. Less well known is that Grotius was the first central Protestant thinker to redefine the concept of ius, so that it was understood as individual or subjective rights. His understanding of ius as a personal moral quality, which he subsequently delimits as the expletive justice or perfect right to one’s own (suum), was given a pivotal role in his system of natural law.
