Towards a long-term dataset of ELBARA-II measurements assisting SMOS level-3 land product and algorithm validation at the Valencia Anchor Station

2015

[EN] The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission was launched on 2nd November 2009 with the objective of providing global estimations of soil moisture and sea salinity. The main activity of the Valencia Anchor Station (VAS) is currently to assist in a long-term validation of SMOS land products. This study focus on a level 3 SMOS data validation with in situ measurements carried out in the period 2010-2012 over the VAS. ELBARA-II radiometer is placed in the VAS area, observing a vineyard field considered as representative of a major proportion of an area of 50×50 km, enough to cover a SMOS footprint. Brightness temperatures (TB) acquired by ELBARA-II have been compared to those obser…

Variability of growth pattern observed in Metoposaurus krasiejowensis humeri and its biological meaning

2017

Purpose Histological studies on temnospondyl amphibian bones remain rare. A systematic revision of the histology was applied for the purpose of testing the histovariability in the humeri and becoming new information about the growth pattern. Methods The present study includes 12 humeri of Metoposaurus krasiejowensis, which originate from the Late Triassic clay pit near Krasiejo´w, southwestern Poland. The specimens were scanned with a microCT and the histological thin-sections have been obtained with the standard petrographic method. Results The evaluation of the studied bones shows a uniform growth series resulting in one morphotype. Strikingly, the histological analysis reveals a greater …

Epidemiological study on supracondylar fractures of distal humerus in pediatric patients

2019

Abstract Objective The purpose of this work is to study the epidemiology of patients with distal humerus supracondylar fractures in pediatric age treated in a tertiary hospital. Method A descriptive study was conducted on the epidemiological characteristics of distal humerus supracondylar fractures in pediatric patients treated in a tertiary hospital from January 1, 2014 to June 30, 2018. The following variables were analyzed: age, side of lesion, sex, type of Gartland’s classification, date of injury, mechanism, place and moment of trauma, therapeutic attitude, complications and associated fractures. Results A total of 140 patients were included in the study, with an average age of 5 years…

Electromagnetic distal targeting system does not reduce the overall operative time of the intramedullary nailing for humeral shaft fractures

2018

Abstract Introduction We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the use of the electromagnetic distal targeting system in treating humeral shaft fracture. Methods Patients were divided in: Group 1) patients that received a distal locking screw placement following the free-hand technique; Group 2) patients in which the distal locking screw was performed using the SURESHOT device. Results No differences were noted comparing Group 1 (freehand) [71,9 range 40–135 min] to Group 2 (SURESHOT)[70, range 25–125 min]. Conclusion The use of the EM distal targeting system doesn't reduce the overall operative time of the humeral shaft fracture fixation using IMN.

Empiricism and Relationism Intertwined: Hume and Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity

2016

Einstein acknowledged that his reading of Hume influenced the development of his special theory of relativity. In this article, I juxtapose Hume’s philosophy with Einstein’s philosophical analysis related to his special relativity. I argue that there are two common points to be found in their writings, namely an empiricist theory of ideas and concepts, and a relationist ontology regarding space and time. The main thesis of this article is that these two points are intertwined in Hume and Einstein.

Bone and body segment lengthening and widening: a 7-year follow-up study in pubertal girls.

2010

Abstract During growth bone increases in length and width as does the body size. The aim of this paper was to examine the growth pattern of body height and weight, and the width and length of various body segments, and to establish the timing of peak growth velocity (PV) in relation to time of menarche in a cohort of Finnish girls followed from age 10 until 18. The study was a 7-year longitudinal cohort study. Widths and lengths of body segments and bones were measured from DXA scan images using bone landmarks in 396 girls aged 10 to 13 years at baseline, and in 255 mothers and 159 grandmothers. The girls' growth velocities (rate of change with time) peaked at 13.5 months prior to menarche …

Loading modalities and bone structures at nonweight-bearing upper extremity and weight-bearing lower extremity: a pQCT study of adult female athletes.

2005

This cross-sectional study of adult female athletes assessed whether the apparent loading-related differences in bone structure are primarily associated with the loading type or the muscle performance-related joint moments. Several structural variables at shaft sites of the tibia, radius and humerus, and distal sites of the tibia and radius were measured with peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) among 113 female national level athletes (representing hurdling, volleyball, soccer, racket-sports and swimming) and their 30 nonathletic referents. For the weight-bearing lower extremities, the loading modalities of the above sports were classified into high-impact (hurdling, volleyba…
