Humility: Virgin or Virtue?

2021

Why Moral Neuroeducation Should Embrace Ethical Humour

2019

Smiling and laughter are voluntary expressions that come from deep within ourselves. They are reflections of the character we construct through the exercise of our own will. Given that we can laugh in an ethically correct or incorrect manner, an “ethical sense of humour” reflects to what extent an individual’s ethics education has been correctly taught. “Ethical humour” is also therapeutic, in the sense that it is beneficial for one’s health. For example, it stimulates the immune system to fight the negative effects of stress, and stimulates the secretion of endorphins, which have an analgesic effect. Neuroscientific studies have demonstrated, among other things, that the cerebellum plays a…

Praising through Intertext. On Jakob Liefer’s Literary Technique in the Neo-Latin Epic Bellum Sundense

2019

Praising through Intertext. On Jakob Liefer’s Literary Technique in the Neo‑Latin Epic Bellum SundenseThis paper examines Jakob Liefer’s (1571‑1655) method of composing a carmen novo modo, that is a combination of laus urbis, epic, and cento. It demonstrates how Liefer systematically employs allusions and citations to turn his account of the historic Margrave War (1308‑1317) into a praise of the city of Stralsund and its inhabitants. The analysis focuses on the work’s intertextual engagement with the characters and settings of Lucan’s Pharsalia and Vergil’s Aeneid. Liefer not only borrows from canonical texts to put Stralsund on the same exalted level as Massilia and Troy respectively, but …

Zum Verhältnis von Religion und Zoologie im 17. Jahrhundert (William Harvey, Nathaniel Highmore, Jan Swammerdam)

1987

Jan Swammerdam was one of the first scientists to do biological research on the basis of physico-theology. He was a very religious man and thought that by studying the secrets of nature he could best serve the Almighty God. He saw his life's work in demostrating the importance of God in the world of the smallest animals. The most important works of Swammerdam refer to the world of the insects and other lower animals, which he called the „legions of the God of Israel”, through which God tells mankind to recognize their sins, to desist from them and to honour him with greater humility. „The miracles of nature” he said „are an open bible, which everywhere points to God as its eternal origin.” …

The Moderating Role of Intellectual Humility in the Adoption of ICT: A Study Across Life-Span

2018

Literature has shown age-related differences in the adoption process. In this way, it is very important to encourage the adoption of ICT by the elderly, in order to maintain their independence in daily life. However, some specific cognitive variables were not considered in theoretical models until a decade ago. One of the emerging fields in this area is the science of learnable intelligence, which investigates the role of thinking dispositions. The variable which we have focused on is intellectual humility. For this propose, a sample of 306 participants from 18 to 87 years was selected. Age was selected as a predictor variable. Intellectual humility was tested as a moderator between ageing …

Dimensions of the Relationship between the Individual and Her Unique Worldview Construction

2021

Each individual constructs his own private worldview using elements from established worldview traditions. The biographical character of this formation makes this the individual’s “Unique Worldview Construction” (UWC). The purpose of this theoretical study is to analyse the dynamic relationship between the individual and her own UWC. It describes more how than what he believes in or denies. The variation is exceedingly complex. To make it accessible, the complexity is crystallized into seven dimensions: (1) The authority structure deals with the individual’s perception of herself as being superordinate/subordinate to her own UWC. (2) The importance dimension analyses the span from indiffere…
