Negli ultimi anni anche la teoria letteraria in Italia ha cominciato ad affrontare la questione del significato biologico della narrazione e della letteratura. Il presupposto di questo interesse sta nel riconoscimento che la narrazione può essere a pieno titolo considerata un “comportamento” tipico della specie Homo sapiens, non foss’altro perché è un fenomeno che riguarda tutta la specie (in tutte le latitudini e a tutte le altezze cronologiche) e può essere considerata nel quadro delle attitudini cognitive che hanno permesso agli umani di costruire una nicchia ecologica che è il prodotto dell’interazione tra evoluzione biologica e costruzioni culturali.

In this paper I will outline a genealogy which could contribute to Siri Hustvedt’s very important statement in her essay Three Emotional Stories: Reflection on Memory, the Imagination, Narrative, and the Self (2011): ‘Writing fiction is remembering what never happened.’ Hustvedt’s essay offers a wonderful analysis of the role of memory and imagi- nation in narrative. But how to situate their very space in human behaviour and mind? Can we outline a topic of imagination in its relation with memory? I suggest that an appropriate blend between the long tradition of philosophical anthropology and the new neuroscientific interpretations of embodied simulation could help us to refine our concepts …

American writer Siri Hustvedt's latest novel, Memories of the Future (Memories of the Future, 2019) offers some cases of amnesia declined in two modes, individual and collective, both of which are necessary to shed light on the theory of memory that the author has elaborated in her essays and novels.

One of the peculiarities of 17th and 18th centuries literature is the link between knowledge and imagination, a relationship in which narration sometimes accompanies science, sometimes goes beyond it.
