Abstract gC1q receptor, a protein originally described as the cell surface receptor for the globular heads of complement factor C1q, has been found to bind human H-kininogen with high affinity and specificity. Therefore, gC1qR has been considered candidate kininogen docking site on the surfaces of platelets, neutrophils and endothelial cells. Recent work demonstrating that gC1qR is an intracellular protein that is tightly associated with mitochondria rather than targeted to the cell surface has challenged this view. The effect of 3-aminobenzamide, inhibitor of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase, on human osteosarcoma cells

This study demonstrates that in human osteosarcoma cells treatment with 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB), a potent inhibitor of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), induces morphological and biochemical features of differentiation, the duration of which depends on whether or not the normal RB gene is expressed. In Saos-2 cells expressing a non-functional Rb protein, 3-AB treatment induced the formation of transient, short dendritic-like protrusions. DSC study on hyaluronan drying and hydration

Abstract The processes of hyaluronan (HYA) drying and hydration were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. In the first approach the isoconversional Kissinger–Akahita–Sunose (KAS) method was applied in order to determine actual activation energies of evaporation of pure water and water from concentrated HYA solutions. Since the evaporation is a single-step process, the activation energies for pure water provided results consistent with tabulated values of evaporation enthalpies. Protein Kinase C μ Is Regulated by the Multifunctional Chaperon Protein p32

We identified the multifunctional chaperon protein p32 as a protein kinase C (PKC)-binding protein interacting with PKCalpha, PKCzeta, PKCdelta, and PKC mu. We have analyzed the interaction of PKC mu with p32 in detail, and we show here in vivo association of PKC mu, as revealed from yeast two-hybrid analysis, precipitation assays using glutathione S-transferase fusion proteins, and reciprocal coimmunoprecipitation. Characterisation of tumour-associated antigens in colon cancer.

In order to search for clinically relevant cancer-associated genes and to define further the spectrum of immunogenic proteins, we applied SEREX (serological identification of antigens by recombinant expression cloning) to analyse genes expressed in colon adenocarcinoma. Although relatively good therapeutic results are achieved in non-advanced cancer, the prognosis of the advanced colon cancer still remains poor, dependent on local or distant recurrence of the disease. CD44v6 is a marker of constitutive and reprogrammed cancer stem cells driving colon cancer metastasis.

SummaryCancer stem cells drive tumor formation and metastasis, but how they acquire metastatic traits is not well understood. Here, we show that all colorectal cancer stem cells (CR-CSCs) express CD44v6, which is required for their migration and generation of metastatic tumors. CD44v6 expression is low in primary tumors but demarcated clonogenic CR-CSC populations. Cytokines hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), osteopontin (OPN), and stromal-derived factor 1α (SDF-1), secreted from tumor associated cells, increase CD44v6 expression in CR-CSCs by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, which promotes migration and metastasis. Complete functional C1q deficiency associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

SUMMARY A complete functional deficiency of Clq is described in a patient suffering from SLE. From reduced plasma C1 activity of the parents a hereditary trait was assumed. The defective C1q molecule was haemolytically inactive, did not bind to immune complexes, and was not recognized by the monocyte C1q receptor. C1 activity in the patient's serum could be restored by the addition of purified C1q.
