Abstract Several P homologous sequences have been cloned and sequenced from Drosophila subobscura. These sequences are located at the 85DE region of the O chromosome and at least three of them are organized in tandem. We have identified four copies which exhibit strong similarity between them. All of the isolated elements are truncated at the 5' and 3' ends. They have lost the inverted terminal repeats and exon 3, but maintain exons 0, 1 and 2. They are transcribed producing a polyadenylated RNA. The structure of these transcripts suggests that they are able to encode a 66 kd repressor-like protein, but not a functional transposase. The Suppressor of fused Gene Encodes a Novel PEST Protein Involved in Drosophila Segment Polarity Establishment

Abstract Suppressor of fused, Su(fu), was identified as a semi-dominant suppressor of the putative serine/threonine kinase encoded by the segment polarity gene fused in Drosophila melanogaster. The amorphic Su(fu) mutation is viable, shows a maternal effect and displays no phenotype by itself. Su(fu) mutations are often found associated to karmoisin (kar) mutations but two complementation groups can be clearly identified. By using a differential hybridization screening method, we have cloned the Su(fu) region and identified chromosomal rearrangements associated with Su(fu) mutations. WWOX-related encephalopathies: delineation of the phenotypical spectrum and emerging genotype-phenotype correlation

Effect of pH and nitrite concentration on nitrite oxidation rate

The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. Echinostomes: genomics and proteomics

Echinostomes are excellent models to study host-parasite interactions in intestinal helminthiases. In this chapter, data available from genomic and proteomic studies are analyzed in detail to indicate advantages and pitfalls in the research using these organisms. The lack of a genome sequence project and the low number of sequences deposited in the databases not only affect the genomic studies but also debilitate proteomic findings since in most cases, although good spectrometric data can be obtained, the available database often fail to identify the protein from the peptides obtained.

Aroma production and fermentation performance of S. cerevisiae × S. kudriavzevii natural hybrids under cold oenological conditions

This work aims to describe the wine fermentation characteristics of 23 natural S. cerevisiae × S. kudriavzevii hybrid yeasts related to fermentative environments isolated from different regions and their significance for the aroma spectra of the produced wines. Fermentations were performed at 12 °C in artificial must, and S. cerevisiae and S. kudriavzevii pure species strains were used for comparison purposes. We determined the relevant kinetic parameters of fermentation, the concentration of the main metabolites and the main aroma-related compounds produced after fermentation. Species-specific song convergence in a moving hybrid zone between two passerines

International audience; Moving hybrid zones are receiving increasing attention. However, so far little is known about the proximate mechanisms underlying these movements. Signalling behaviour, by individuals engaged in interspecific sexual and aggressive interactions, may play a crucial role.
