Quantification of the Fabry marker lysoGb3 in human plasma by tandem mass spectrometry

Morbus Fabry is a hereditary metabolic disorder with low prevalence and late clinical manifestation. A defect in the α-galactosidase gene leads to lysosomal accumulation of the glycolipid globotriaosylceramide (Gb3). Gb3 may be used for monitoring of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), but diagnostic sensitivity is limited. Recently, globotriaosylsphingosine (lysoGb3) was introduced as a promising new marker with significantly better sensitivity. Perilipin polymorphism interacts with saturated fat and carbohydrates to modulate insulin resistance

Macronutrient intakes and genetic variants have been shown to interact to alter the risk of insulin resistance, but replication of gene-nutrient interactions across independent populations may be difficult to achieve. Saturated fat and carbohydrate were previously shown to interact with genotype for insulin resistance for a variant of perilipin (PLIN), the major adipocyte-associated protein and a regulator of adipocyte metabolism. Nutrient intake of endurance runners with ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet and regular western diet

During an endurance run (1,000 km in 20 days) it was investigated whether an ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet (OLVD) could cover the nutritional requirements of endurance athletes. A regular western diet (RWD) was used as reference. Both diets were offered with an energy content of 4,500 kcal per day and an energy percentage of carbohydrate:fat:protein of 60:30:10. The runners were divided into two dietary groups according to their usual dietary habits. The results of the 55 participants who completed the race show that runners from both groups had the same intake of energy, carbohydrate, fat and protein. Resting metabolic rate and postabsorptive substrate oxidation in morbidly obese subjects before and after massive weight loss

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of resting metabolic rate (RMR) and postabsorptive oxidation of carbohydrates (CHO), lipids (LIP) and proteins (PT) in morbidly obese subjects after long-term stable massive weight reduction. Doxepin and its metabolites in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in depressed patients

Little information exists on the concentrations of antidepressants and their metabolites in CSF. We measured plasma and CSF levels of trans-doxepin (trans-DOX) and DOX metabolites in 12 depressed patients treated with DOX (250 mg/day) for 6 days. Spinal taps and blood samples were taken on day 7, 10 h after drug administration. Trans-DOX, cis-desmethyldoxepin (cis-DM-DOX), trans-desmethyldoxepin (trans-DM-DOX) and di-desmethyldoxepin (DDM-DOX) were analyzed in CSF and plasma samples by HPLC with column-switching. Glucose polymer syrup attenuates prolonged endurance exercise-induced vasopressin release

We investigated the effect of glucose and glucose polymer ingestion on plasma arginine vasopressin (pAVP) levels, on plasma osmolality (p-osm), and on performance during two prolonged endurance events. The study subjects were 37 Finnish elite endurance athletes, of whom 18 were orienteers and 19 cross-country skiers. Plasma AVP increased in both combined glucose and glucose polymer groups, but the increase in the glucose polymer group was significantly smaller (P less than 0.001) than that in the glucose group.
