Mass accretion to young stars triggered by flaring activity in circumstellar discs
2011
Young low-mass stars are characterized by ejection of collimated outflows and by circumstellar disks which they interact with through accretion of mass. The accretion builds up the star to its final mass and is also believed to power the mass outflows, which may in turn remove the excess angular momentum from the star-disk system. However, although the process of mass accretion is a critical aspect of star formation, some of its mechanisms are still to be fully understood. A point not considered to date and relevant for the accretion process is the evidence of very energetic and frequent flaring events in these stars. Flares may easily perturb the stability of the disks, thus influencing th…
General relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of prompt-collapse neutron star mergers: The absence of jets
2017
Inspiraling and merging binary neutron stars are not only important source of gravitational waves, but also promising candidates for coincident electromagnetic counterparts. These systems are thought to be progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs). We have shown previously that binary neutron star mergers that undergo delayed collapse to a black hole surrounded by a weighty magnetized accretion disk can drive magnetically powered jets. We now perform magnetohydrodynamic simulations in full general relativity of binary neutron stars mergers that undergo prompt collapse to explore the possibility of jet formation from black hole-light accretion disk remnants. We find that after t − tBH ~2…
High-order methods for the simulation of hydromagnetic instabilities in core-collapse supernovae
2011
AbstractWe present an assessment of the accuracy of a recently developed MHD code used to study hydromagnetic flows in supernovae and related events. The code, based on the constrained transport formulation, incorporates unprecedented ultra-high-order methods (up to 9th order) for the reconstruction and the most accurate approximate Riemann solvers. We estimate the numerical resistivity of these schemes in tearing instability simulations.
Fe Kα and Hydrodynamic Loop Model Diagnostics for a Large Flare on II Pegasi
2008
The observation by the Swift X-ray Telescope of the Fe K alpha_1, alpha_2 doublet during a large flare on the RS CVn binary system II Peg represents one of only two firm detections to date of photospheric Fe K alpha from a star other than our Sun. We present models of the Fe K alpha equivalent widths reported in the literature for the II Peg observations and show that they are most probably due to fluorescence following inner shell photoionisation of quasi-neutral Fe by the flare X-rays. Our models constrain the maximum height of flare the to 0.15 R_* assuming solar abundances for the photospheric material, and 0.1 R_* and 0.06 R_* assuming depleted photospheric abundances ([M/H]=-0.2 and […
Probing the internal solar magnetic field through g-modes
2006
The observation of g-mode candidates by the SoHO mission opens the possibility of probing the internal structure of the solar radiative zone (RZ) and the solar core more directly than possible via the use of the p-mode helioseismology data. We study the effect of rotation and RZ magnetic fields on g-mode frequencies. Using a self-consistent static MHD magnetic field model we show that a 1% g-mode frequency shift with respect to the Solar Seismic Model (SSeM) prediction, currently hinted in the GOLF data, can be obtained for magnetic fields as low as 300 kG, for current measured modes of radial order n=-20. On the other hand, we also argue that a similar shift for the case of the low order g…
Radiative zone solar magnetic fields and g modes
2005
We consider a generalized model of seismic-wave propagation that takes into account the effect of a central magnetic field in the Sun. We determine the g-mode spectrum in the perturbative magnetic field limit using a one-dimensional Magneto-Hydrodynamics (MHD) picture. We show that central magnetic fields of about 600-800 kG can displace the pure g-mode frequencies by about 1%, as hinted by the helioseismic interpretation of GOLF observations.
SIMULATIONS OF DYNAMICS AND EMISSION FROM MAGNETIZED GRB AFTERGLOWS
2010
The role of magnetic fields in the GRB flow is still controversial. The afterglow emission, particularly the early phases, may provide a probe into the magnetization of the outflow. Using ultrahigh resolution relativistic MHD simulations, the interaction between radially expanding magnetized ejecta with the interstellar medium is studied. We explore the effect of the magnetic field strength of the ejecta on the afterglow structure, particularly regarding the presence and strength of a reverse shock. We compute synthetic afterglow light curves to quantify the effect of the magnetization of the flow on observed radiation.
Ab initiosimulations of accretion disc instability
2003
We show that accretion disks, both in the subcritical and supercritical accretion rate regime, may exhibit significant amplitude luminosity oscillations. The luminosity time behavior has been obtained by performing a set of time-dependent 2D SPH simulations of accretion disks with different values of alpha and accretion rate. In this study, to avoid any influence of the initial disk configuration, we produced the disks injecting matter from an outer edge far from the central object. The period of oscillations is 2 - 50 s respectively for the two cases, and the variation amplitude of the disc luminosity is 10^38 - 10^39 erg/s. An explanation of this luminosity behavior is proposed in terms o…
Role of local absorption on the X-ray emission from MHD accretion shocks in classical T Tauri stars
2014
Accretion processes onto classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) are believed to generate shocks at the stellar surface due to the impact of supersonic downflowing plasma. Although current models of accretion streams provide a plausible global picture of this process, several aspects are still unclear. For example, the observed X-ray luminosity in accretion shocks is, in general, well below the predicted value. A possible explanation discussed in the literature is in terms of significant absorption of the emission due to the thick surrounding medium. Here we consider a 2D MHD model describing an accretion stream propagating through the atmosphere of a CTTS and impacting onto its chromosphere. The m…
Shock-cloud interaction in the Vela SNR II. Hydrodynamic model
2006
In the framework of the study of the X-ray and optical emission in supernova remnants we focus on an isolated X-ray knot in the northern rim of the Vela SNR (Vela FilD), whose X-ray emission has been studied and discussed in Paper I. We aim at understanding the physical origin of the X-ray and optical emission in FilD, at understanding the role of the different physical processes at work, and at obtaining a key for the interpretation of future X-ray observations of SNRs. To this end we have pursued an accurate ``forward'' modeling of the interaction of the Vela SNR shock with an ISM cloud. We perform hydrodynamic simulations and we directly compare the observables synthesized from the simul…
