The structure of steady, relativistic, magnetised jets with rotation
2015
We present equilibrium models of relativistic magnetised, infinite, axisymmetric jets with rotation propagating through an homogeneous, unmagnetised ambient medium at rest. The jet models are characterised by six functions defining the radial profiles of density, pressure, and the toroidal and axial components of velocity and magnetic field. Fixing the ambient pressure and the jet rest-mass density and axial components of the flow velocity and magnetic field, we analyze the influence of the toroidal magnetic field and several rotation laws on the structure of the equilibrium models. Our approach excludes by construction the analysis of the self-consistently magnetically launched jet models …
Jet stability, dynamics and energy transport
2011
Relativistic jets carry energy and particles from compact to very large scales compared with their initial radius. This is possible due to their remarkable collimation despite their intrinsic unstable nature. In this contribution, I review the state-of-the-art of our knowledge on instabilities growing in those jets and several stabilising mechanisms that may give an answer to the question of the stability of jets. In particular, during the last years we have learned that the limit imposed by the speed of light sets a maximum amplitude to the instabilities, contrary to the case of classical jets. On top of this stabilising mechanism, the fast growth of unstable modes with small wavelengths p…
Towards modelling the central engine of short GRBs
2011
Numerical relativity simulations of non-vacuum spacetimes have reached a status where a complete description of the inspiral, merger and post-merger stages of the late evolution of close binary neutron systems is possible. Determining the properties of the black-hole-torus system produced in such an event is a key aspect to understand the central engine of short-hard gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs). Of the many properties characterizing the torus, the total rest-mass is the most important one, since it is the torus' binding energy which can be tapped to extract the large amount of energy necessary to power the sGRB emission. In addition, the rest-mass density and angular momentum distribution in t…
An introduction to relativistic hydrodynamics
2007
We review formulations of the equations of (inviscid) general relativistic hydrodynamics and (ideal) magnetohydrodynamics, along with methods for their numerical solution. Both systems can be cast as first-order, hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, following the explicit choice of an Eulerian observer and suitable fluid and magnetic field variables. During the last fifteen years, the so-called (upwind) high-resolution shock-capturing schemes based on Riemann solvers have been successfully extended from classical to relativistic fluid dynamics, both special and general. Nowadays, general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations in relativistic astrophysics are routinely performed, partic…
Relativistic MHD simulations of stellar core collapse and magnetars
2011
We present results from simulations of magneto-rotational stellar core collapse along with Alfven oscillations in magnetars. These simulations are performed with the CoCoA/CoCoNuT code, which is able to handle ideal MHD flows in dynamical spacetimes in general relativity. Our core collapse simulations highlight the importance of genuine magnetic effects, like the magneto-rotational instability, for the dynamics of the flow. For the modelling of magnetars we use the anelastic approximation to general relativistic MHD, which allows for an effective suppression of fluid modes and an accurate description of Alfven waves. We further compute Alfven oscillation frequencies along individual magneti…
Nonlinear stability of relativistic sheared planar jets
2005
The linear and non-linear stability of sheared, relativistic planar jets is studied by means of linear stability analysis and numerical hydrodynamical simulations. Our results extend the previous Kelvin-Hemlholtz stability studies for relativistic, planar jets in the vortex sheet approximation performed by Perucho et al. (2004a,b) by including a shear layer between the jet and the external medium and more general perturbations. The models considered span a wide range of Lorentz factors ($2.5-20$) and internal energies ($0.08 c^2-60 c^2$) and are classified into three classes according to the main characteristics of their long-term, non-linear evolution. We observe a clear separation of thes…
MHD modelling of coronal loops: injection of high-speed chromospheric flows
2014
Observations reveal a correspondence between chromospheric type II spicules and bright upwardly moving fronts in the corona observed in the EUV band. However, theoretical considerations suggest that these flows are unlikely to be the main source of heating in coronal magnetic loops. We investigate the propagation of high-speed chromospheric flows into coronal magnetic flux tubes, and the possible production of emission in the EUV band. We simulate the propagation of a dense $10^4$ K chromospheric jet upwards along a coronal loop, by means of a 2-D cylindrical MHD model, including gravity, radiative losses, thermal conduction and magnetic induction. The jet propagates in a complete atmospher…
X-RAY EMISSION FROM PROTOSTELLAR JET HH 154: THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF A DIAMOND SHOCK?
2011
X-ray emission from about ten protostellar jets has been discovered and it appears as a feature common to the most energetic jets. Although X-ray emission seems to originate from shocks internal to jets, the mechanism forming these shocks remains controversial. One of the best studied X-ray jet is HH 154 that has been observed by Chandra over a time base of about 10 years. We analyze the Chandra observations of HH 154 by investigating the evolution of its X-ray source. We show that the X-ray emission consists of a bright stationary component and a faint elongated component. We interpret the observations by developing a hydrodynamic model describing a protostellar jet originating from a nozz…
The Complex Morphology of the X-ray and Optical Emission from HH 154: The Pulsed Jet Scenario
2009
We study the optical and X-ray emission from protostellar jets, focusing, in particular, on the case of HH 154. This project consists of two different and complementary approaches: the development of hydrodynamical models of the jet/ambient interaction, and the analysis of multi-wavelength observations. Comparing the results derived from the simulations with the observations we can infer the physical mechanisms leading to the complex morphology of the X-rays source observed at the base of HH 154.
Generation of radiative knots in a randomly pulsed protostellar jet
2009
HH objects are characterized by a complex knotty morphology detected mainly along the axis of protostellar jets in a wide range of bands. Evidence of interactions between knots formed in different epochs have been found, suggesting that jets may result from the ejection of plasma blobs from the source. We aim at investigating the physical mechanism leading to the irregular knotty structure observed in jets in different bands and the complex interactions occurring among blobs of plasma ejected from the stellar source. We perform 2D axisymmetric HD simulations of a randomly ejected pulsed jet. The jet consists of a train of blobs which ram with supersonic speed into the ambient medium. The in…
