Microbial acidification and pH effects on trace element release from sewage sludge.

Leaching of sludge-borne trace elements has been observed in experimental and field studies. The role of microbial processes in the mobilization of trace elements from wastewater sludge is poorly defined. Our objectives were to determine trace element mobilization from sludge subjected to treatments representing microbial acidification, direct chemical acidification and no acidification, and to determine the readsorption potential of mobilized elements using calcareous sand. The strong interaction between avidin and biotin is so tight (dissociation constant 10-15M) that conditions usually sufficient for protein denaturing fail to dislodge biotin from the avidin—biotin complex. This kind of irreversible binding hinders the use of avidin in applications such as affinity purification or protein immobilization. Abstract Literature data relevant to the decision to allow a waiver of in vivo bioequivalence (BE) testing for the approval of immediate-release (IR) solid oral dosage forms containing bisoprolol as the sole active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) are reviewed. Microregional distributions of glucose, lactate and ATP concentrations as well as tissue pH values were determined in subcutaneous rat tumours during normothermia and normoglycaemia, and upon local hyperthermia (HT) and/or hyperglycaemia (HG). Experiments were performed in order to investigate whether, and to what extent, these adjuvant therapeutic measures applied alone or in combination can modify the bioenergetic and metabolic status, parameters that are known to markedly influence the therapeutic response of tumours to heat. Properties of erythrocyte light refraction in diabetic patients.

Since hyperglycaemia changes the erythrocyte cell membrane fluidity and impairs cell deformity, our goal was to characterize hemoglobin and red blood cell (RBC) light refractive property changes in diabetic patients. Microscopic investigation was carried out on intact and fixed RBCs. To determine the refractive index (RI): smears of peripheral blood were air dried and fixed for 3 min in methanol. Mixtures of polyvinylpyrolidine and buffer of different pH (1:1) were used as embedding media. A new approach for selection of Oenococcus oeni strains in order to produce malolactic starters.

The lactic acid bacterium Oenococcus oeni, mainly responsible for malolactic fermentation (MLF), is used in new winery process as starter culture for direct inoculation. The difficulty to master MLF according to the wine led us to search a new approach to select effective O. oeni strains. Biochemical and molecular tests were performed in order to characterize three strains of O. oeni selected for malolactic starter elaboration. ABSTRACT Bacillus thuringiensis vegetative insecticidal proteins (Vip3A) have been recently introduced in important crops as a strategy to delay the emerging resistance to the existing Cry toxins. The mode of action of Vip3A proteins has been studied in Spodoptera frugiperda with the aim of characterizing their binding to the insect midgut. Immunofluorescence histological localization of Vip3Aa in the midgut of intoxicated larvae showed that Vip3Aa bound to the brush border membrane along the entire apical surface.
