SCD5-induced oleic acid production reduces melanoma malignancy by intracellular retention of SPARC and cathepsin B
2014
A proper balance between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) is required for maintaining cell homeostasis. The increased demand of FAs to assemble the plasma membranes of continuously dividing cancer cells might unbalance this ratio and critically affect tumour outgrowth. We unveiled the role of the stearoyl-CoA desaturase SCD5 in converting saturated FAs into mono-unsaturated FAs during melanoma progression. SCD5 is down-regulated in advanced melanoma and its restored expression significantly reduced melanoma malignancy, both in vitro and in vivo, through a mechanism governing the secretion of extracellular matrix proteins, such as secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPAR…
DC01 steel corrosion resistance in cathodic polarization
2016
Celem prowadzonych badań było okreœlenie odporności korozyjnej stali DC01 poddanej katodowej polaryzacji w zmiennych warunkach. Elektrochemiczne pomiary służące do oceny odpornoœci korozyjnej stali nienawodorowanej poddanej katodowej polaryzacji przeprowadzono metodami obejmującymi pomiar potencjału obwodu otwartego i zarejestrowania zależności i=f(E) podczas badań polaryzacyjnych w trójelektrodowym układzie pomiarowym.

Effect of hydrogen on the ethylene polymerization process over Ziegler–Natta catalysts supported on MgCl2(THF)2. I. Studies of the chain‐transfer rea…
2001
The effect of hydrogen on the molecular weight of polyethylene obtained over vanadium catalysts (based on VCl4 and VOCl3) supported on MgCl2(THF)2 was studied and the results were compared to those obtained for similar titanium catalysts. It was confirmed that the dependencies of the transfer reaction on the hydrogen concentration are a half‐order in all investigated systems. However, the transition metal of the catalytic site affects the ratio of the transfer rate with hydrogen to the propagation rate (ktr,H/kp) and the results showed that hydrogen is a more effective agent of polyethylene molecular weight control in vanadium‐based systems as compared to the titanium catalyst.

Theoretical evaluation of structures and energetics involved in the hydrogenation of hydrocarbons on palladium surfaces
2001
Abstract Quantum mechanical calculations were employed to deepen information about the basic properties of the mechanism occurring in the palladium catalytic hydrogenation involving surface hydrogen species of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Activation energy values of elementary events implicated in the whole reaction were computed by potential energy surface analyses, to determine the corresponding occurrence probabilities of the same events. Different surface hydrogen species were pointed out and their relevance in the overall surface process was discussed together with their geometrical and chemical characteristics.
Water Adsorption Properties of Free and Dehydrated β-Cyclodextrin Studied by near Infrared Spectroscopy and Gravimetry
2016
β-cyclodextrin, like other carbohydrates has a tendency to adsorb water molecules and the properties are attributed to the hydroxyl groups in the molecules. β-cyclodextrin, the cyclic oligomer of glucose has a hydrophobic interior and hydrophilic exterior. The cyclic structure favours the formation of hydrogen bonds between the OH groups on the adjacent glucose units and affects the formation of hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The hydoxyl groups engaged in hydrogen bondings can be eliminated at high temperatures and the adsorption properties of the dehydrated β-cyclodextrin will depend on the new functional groups formed. The aim of the report is to discuss the issue of the water adsor…
Achieving Strong Positive Cooperativity through Activating Weak Non-Covalent Interactions
2018
Positive cooperativity achieved through activating weak non-covalent interactions is common in biological assemblies but is rarely observed in synthetic complexes. Two new molecular tubes have been synthesized and the syn isomer binds DABCO-based organic cations with high orientational selectivity. Surprisingly, the ternary complex with two hosts and one guest shows a high cooperativity factor (α=580), which is the highest reported for synthetic systems without involving ion-pairing interactions. The X-ray single-crystal structure revealed that the strong positive cooperativity likely originates from eight C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds between the two head-to-head-arranged syn tube molecules. Thes…
Two Polymorphic Forms of a Six-Coordinate Mononuclear Cobalt(II) Complex with Easy-Plane Anisotropy: Structural Features, Theoretical Calculations, a…
2016
A mononuclear cobalt(II) complex [Co(3,5-dnb)2(py)2(H2O)2] {3,5-Hdnb = 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid; py = pyridine} was isolated in two polymorphs, in space groups C2/c (1) and P21/c (2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that 1 and 2 are not isostructural in spite of having equal formulas and ligand connectivity. In both structures, the Co(II) centers adopt octahedral {CoN2O4} geometries filled by pairs of mutually trans terminal 3,5-dnb, py, and water ligands. However, the structures of 1 and 2 disclose distinct packing patterns driven by strong intermolecular O-H···O hydrogen bonds, leading to their 0D→2D (1) or 0D→1D (2) extension. The resulting two-dimensional layers and one-…
Competitive NH···Ru/Fe Hydrogen Bonding in Ferrocenyl Ruthenocenyl Tosyl Hydrazone
2016
A strong nonclassical NH···Fe intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) is present in the literature-known diferrocenyl tosyl hydrazone (1). Here, we confirm by NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as by XRD methods that an analogous NH···Ru IHB is present in the heavier homologue diruthenocenyl tosyl hydrazone (2). The NH···Ru IHB in 2 is stronger than the NH···Fe IHB in 1 by 6 kJ mol–1, as determined by IR spectroscopy. Further, we probed the E/Z isomer directing abilities of NH···M IHBs in the synthesis of the mixed metallocenyl compound ferrocenyl ruthenocenyl tosyl hydrazone (3). 3 is obtained as a mixture of the Z and E isomers (3a,b) with NH···Ru and NH···Fe IHBs, respectively. At 111 °C, 3a is …
