Selective Guest Inclusion in Oxalate-Based Iron(III) Magnetic Coordination Polymers

2016

The preparation and structural characterization of four novel oxalate-based iron(III) compounds of formulas {(MeNH3)2[Fe2(ox)2Cl4]·2.5H2O}n (1), K(MeNH3)[Fe(ox)Cl3(H2O)] (2), {MeNH3[Fe2(OH)(ox)2Cl2]·2H2O}n (3), and {(H3O)(MeNH3)[Fe2O(ox)2Cl2]·3H2O}n (4) (MeNH3+ = methylammonium cation and H2ox = oxalic acid) are reported here. 1 is an anionic waving chain of oxalato-bridged iron(III) ions with peripheral chloro ligands, the charge balance being ensured by methylammonium cations. 2 is a mononuclear complex with a bidentate oxalate, three terminal chloro ligands, and a coordinated water molecule achieving the six-coordination around each iron(III) ion. Its negative charge is balanced by potas…

Thermodynamics of hydronium and hydroxide surface solvation.

2014

[Introduction] The concentration of hydronium and hydroxide at the water-air interface has been under debate for a long time. Recent evidence from a range of experiments and theoretical calculations strongly suggests the water surface is somewhat acidic. Using novel polarizable models we have performed potential of mean force calculations of a hydronium ion, a hydroxide ion and a water molecule in a water droplet and a water slab and we were able to rationalize that hydronium, but not hydroxide, is slightly enriched at the surface for two reasons. First, because the hydrogen-bond acceptance capacity of hydronium is weaker than water it is more favorable to have the hydronium oxygen on the s…

Dependence of the mobility of tracer ions in aqueous perchlorate solutions on the hydrogen ion concentration

2003

The dependence of the absolute individual ion mobility (AIIM) of the carrier-free radioactive ions [137Cs]Cs+, [201Tl]Tl+ and [57Co]Co2+ on the hydrogen ion concentration in aqueous perchlorate electrolyte mixtures was studied by means of the electromigration technique. The AIIM of the radioactive ions was found to decrease as the hydrogen ion concentration of the electrolyte mixture increases. Above pH > 4 there is a fairly good agreement between experimental and calculated values. Below pH 4 the experimentally observed decrease of the AIIM is not explained by the extended Debye–Huckel–Onsager limiting law. The effect can possibly be explained by a change of the dynamical properties of ele…

XPS study of leached glass surfaces

1990

Abstract By use of a special deconvolution algorithm, it was possible to decompose the XPS O 1s signal into several components reflecting different oxygen bonds. The influence of exposure in vacuo, environmental atmosphere, distilled water, and in a polish solution as corrosive media on the surface of different glasses has been studied. The O 1s signals of fused silica, Na 2 O· n SiO 2 glasses, a BaO·SiO 2 and a BaOB 2 O 3 SiO 2 glass (Schott SK 16) were analyzed. On the glass surfaces, leached layers were formed and analyzed qualitatively and semiquantitatively by XPS and optical and infrared methods. As a reference, virgin surfaces of samples broken in ultrahigh vacuum have been used. T…

An electrochemical impedance and ac-electrogravimetry study of PNR films in aqueous salt media

2002

Electrochemical impedance spectra and ac-eletrogravimetry of poly(neutral red) films are studied in different aqueous media. The dependence of these experimental data on the nature of alkaline cation and monovalent anion present in the solution and on the pH is analysed. During the electrochemical processes, it is observed that all three species—the salt cation, the salt anion and the hydronium ion—participate to balance the electrical charge within the film. It is also possible to conclude that the participation of anions takes place faster than hydronium ions participation. Besides, the relative participation of these species is related to the pH of the solution. Keywords: Poly (neutral r…

Proton transfer through the water gossamer.

2013

International audience; The diffusion of protons through water is understood within the framework of the Grotthuss mechanism, which requires that they undergo structural diffusion in a stepwise manner throughout the water network. Despite long study, this picture oversimplifies and neglects the complexity of the supramolecular structure of water. We use first-principles simulations and demonstrate that the currently accepted picture of proton diffusion is in need of revision. We show that proton and hydroxide diffusion occurs through periods of intense activity involving concerted proton hopping followed by periods of rest. The picture that emerges is that proton transfer is a multiscale an…
