Alignment-to-orientation conversion in a magnetic field at nonlinear excitation of theD2line of rubidium: Experiment and theory
2015
We studied alignment-to-orientation conversion caused by excited-state level crossings in a nonzero magnetic field of both atomic rubidium isotopes. Experimental measurements were performed on the transitions of the $D_2$ line of rubidium. These measured signals were described by a theoretical model that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. In the experiments laser induced fluorescence (LIF) components were observed at linearly polarized excitation and their difference was taken afterwards. By observing the two oppositely circ…
Hyperfine interaction in the Autler-Townes effect: The formation of bright, dark, and chameleon states
2017
This paper is devoted to clarifying the implications of hyperfine (HF) interaction in the formation of adiabatic (i.e., ``laser-dressed'') states and their expression in the Autler-Townes (AT) spectra. We first use the Morris-Shore model [J. R. Morris and B. W. Shore, Phys. Rev. A 27, 906 (1983)] to illustrate how bright and dark states are formed in a simple reference system where closely spaced energy levels are coupled to a single state with a strong laser field with the respective Rabi frequency ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}}_{S}$. We then expand the simulations to realistic hyperfine level systems in Na atoms for a more general case when non-negligible HF interaction can be treated as…
Characterization ofE′δand triplet point defects in oxygen-deficient amorphous silicon dioxide
2006
We report an experimental study by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray irradiation induced point defects in oxygen deficient amorphous $\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ materials. We have found that three intrinsic ($\mathrm{E}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, $\mathrm{E}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}_{\ensuremath{\delta}}$, and triplet) and one extrinsic $({[\mathrm{Al}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}]}^{0})$ paramagnetic centers are induced. All the paramagnetic defects but $\mathrm{E}^{\ensuremath{'}}{}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ center are found to reach a concentration limit value for doses above ${10}^{3}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{kGy}$, suggesting a generation process f…
Chiral perturbation theory of hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen
2016
We present the leading-order prediction of baryon chiral perturbation theory for the proton polarizability contribution to the 2S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen, and compare with the results of dispersive calculations.
Hyperfine structure in 5s 4d 3 D ?5snf transitions of87Sr
1993
The hyperfine spectra of the 5s4d3D1-5s20f, 5s4d3D2-5s23f, and 5s 4d3D3-5s32f transitions of87Sr (I=9/2) have been measured by collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy. The structure in the upper configurations is highly perturbed by fine structure splitting that is of comparable size to the hyperfine interaction energy. These perturbations can be adequately treated with conventional matrix diagonalization methods, using the 5s-electron magnetic dipole interaction terma5s and the unperturbed fine structure splittings as input parameters. Additionally, hyperfine constants for the lower 5s4d3D configurations, including theA- andB-factors and a separation of the individuals- andd-electron contri…
Large orbital moments and internal magnetic fields in lithium nitridoferrate(I)
2002
The iron nitridometalates Li2[(Li(1-x)Fe(I)(x))N] display ferromagnetic ordering and spin freezing. Large magnetic moments up to 5.0mu(B)/Fe are found in the magnetization. In Mössbauer effect studies huge hyperfine magnetic fields up to 696 kOe are observed at specific Fe sites. These extraordinary fields and moments originate in an unusual ligand field splitting for those Fe species leading [within local spin density approximation (LSDA)] to a localized orbitally degenerate doublet. Including spin-orbit interaction and strong intra-atomic electron correlation (LDA+SO+U) gives rise to a large orbital momentum.
Coherent collisional spin dynamics in optical lattices
2005
We report on the observation of coherent, purely collisionally driven spin dynamics of neutral atoms in an optical lattice. For high lattice depths, atom pairs confined to the same lattice site show weakly damped Rabi-type oscillations between two-particle Zeeman states of equal magnetization, induced by spin changing collisions. This paves the way towards the efficient creation of robust entangled atom pairs in an optical lattice. Moreover, measurement of the oscillation frequency allows for precise determination of the spin-changing collisional coupling strengths, which are directly related to fundamental scattering lengths describing interatomic collisions at ultracold temperatures.
Hyperfine-structure measurements on trapped Pb II.
1992
The 6${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$-6${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$ magnetic dipole resonance transition in ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{+}$ has been observed by cw laser excitation of an ion cloud stored in a Paul trap and subsequent detection of the fluorescence radiation. From the hyperfine-structure splitting of the spectrum we determine the A factor for the ground state, A(${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$)=12.967(13) GHz, and the excited state, A(${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$)=0.580(3) GHz. From a contamination of $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ in our sample we derived the $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}^{+}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}^{208}$${\mathrm{Pb}}^{+}$ isotope shift [\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\nu}=311(14) MHz]. A small electric quadrupole admixture …
Spins and Magnetic Moments ofK49andK51: Establishing the1/2+and3/2+Level Ordering BeyondN=28
2013
The ground-state spins and magnetic moments of $^{49,51}\mathrm{K}$ have been measured using bunched-beam high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE CERN. For $^{49}\mathrm{K}$ a ground-state spin $I=1/2$ was firmly established. The observed hyperfine structure of $^{51}\mathrm{K}$ requires a spin $Ig1/2$ and strongly suggests $I=3/2$. From its magnetic moment $\ensuremath{\mu}(^{51}\mathrm{K})=+0.5129(22){\ensuremath{\mu}}_{N}$ a spin-parity ${I}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=3/{2}^{+}$ with a dominant $\ensuremath{\pi}1{d}_{3/2}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ hole configuration was deduced. This establishes for the first time the reinversion of the single-particle levels and illustrates the prominen…
Spin-lattice relaxation via quantum tunneling in anEr3+-polyoxometalate molecular magnet
2010
We investigate the mechanism of spin-lattice relaxation of Er ions encapsulated in polyoxometalate clusters, which below 4 K can only reverse its spin via quantum tunneling processes. The temperature-independent rate −1 is, at zero field, ten orders of magnitude larger than the rates predicted for direct phonon-induced processes. In addition, we observe that −1 is suppressed by external magnetic bias and hyperfine interactions but enhanced by increasing the concentration of Er ions. The observed relaxation agrees with predictions for pure quantum tunneling, showing that this phenomenon drives the thermalization of electronic spins. A possible link between these two phenomena is discussed, i…
