Graves' disease (GD) is a systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by the infiltration of thyroid antigen-specific T cells into thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSH-R)-expressing tissues. Stimulatory autoantibodies (Ab) in GD activate the TSH-R leading to thyroid hyperplasia and unregulated thyroid hormone production and secretion. Diagnosis of GD is straightforward in a patient with biochemically confirmed thyrotoxicosis, positive TSH-R-Ab, a hypervascular and hypoechoic thyroid gland (ultrasound), and associated orbitopathy. An ectopic thyroid is a form of thyroid dysgenesis in which the entire thyroid gland or parts of it may be located in another part of the body than the usual place. The most frequent location is the base of the tongue. Treatment of hyperthyroidism with radioiodine targeted activity: A comparison between two dosimetric methods.

Effect of Thyroid Hormones on Urea Biosynthesis and Related Processes in Rat Liver*

The results of the few studies on the effect of the thyroid status on nitrogen metabolism have been inconclusive and/or contradictory. In an attempt to elucidate this important relationship, we have studied the effect of experimental hypo- and hyperthyroidism on urea biosynthesis and related processes. We have found that the capacity of the liver to synthesize urea was increased in hypothyroid rats, as were the activities of the urea cycle enzymes; there were also changes in the activities of some related enzymes and in the levels of intermediates and amino acids. Favorable clinical heart and bone effects of anti-thyroid drug therapy in endogenous subclinical hyperthyroidism

Although subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) has been associated with increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiac arrhythmias, its treatment is still controversial. This study was designed as a prospective, randomized, intervention, control-study with a 1-year follow-up in order to investigate whether normalization of serum TSH in SCH using methimazole has favorable bone and heart clinical effects. The effects of insulin on transport and metabolism of glucose in skeletal muscle from hyperthyroid and hypothyroid rats.

The effects of insulin on the rates of glucose disposal were studied in soleus muscles isolated from hyper- or hypothyroid rats. Treatment with triiodothyronine for 5 or 10 days decreased the sensitivity of glycogen synthesis but increased the sensitivity of lactate formation to insulin. The sensitivity of 3-O methylglucose to insulin was increased only after 10 days of treatment and was accompanied by an increase in the sensitivity of 2-deoxyglucose phosphorylation; however, 2-deoxyglucose and glucose 6-phosphate in response to insulin remained unaltered. Buccal delivery of Methimazole as an alternative means to optimize drug bioavailability: permeation studies and matrix system design

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential for systemic administration of Methimazole (MMI) through the buccal mucosa as an alternative route for drug delivery. Considering that the most important restriction in buccal drug delivery could be the low permeability of the mucosa, the ability of MMI to cross the mucosal barrier was assessed. Permeation of MMI through porcine buccal mucosa was investigated ex vivo using Franz type diffusion cells, buffer solution simulating saliva or natural human saliva as donor phase.
