Pythium regulare (CI-34) was isolated from some soil samples taken in the Canary Islands (Spain). This new species is very closely related to P. irregulare isolated from pea roots in The Netherlands by Buisman in 1927. The species of Pythium are members of the kingdom Chromista. Pythium regulare is characterized by its ornamented oogonia bearing blunt or digitate spines, and its non-sporulating type of sporangia or hyphal bodies, its aplerotic oospores, its monoclinous and diclinous antheridia that at times crowd around the oogonia. Candida albicans , the major human fungal pathogen, undergoes a reversible morphological transition from single yeast cells to pseudohyphal and hyphal filaments (elongated cells attached end-to-end). Because typical C. albicans infections contain a mixture of these morphologies it has, for many years, been difficult to assess the relative contribution of each form to virulence. In addition, the regulatory mechanisms that determine growth in pseudohyphal and hyphal morphologies are largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to characterize sixteen isolates of Trichoderma originating from a field of sugar beet where disease patches caused by Rhizoctonia solani were observed. Use of both molecular and morphological characteristics gave consistent identification of the isolates. Production of water-soluble and volatile inhibitors, mycoparasitism and induced systemic resistance in plant host were investigated using in vitro and in vivo tests in both sterilized and natural soils. Abstract Plantlets of Atriplex nummularia were inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Glomus intraradices in a pot experiment. Plants were grown in a low P soil. Highly significant growth response of a Chenopodiaceae was recorded for the first time. Mycorrhizal colonization of roots was well developed, internal hyphae and vesicles were observed, but not arbuscules. These observations suggest that arbuscules are not necessary to obtain significant growth stimulation from mycorrhizal inoculation. Atriplex nummularia is already used as forage crops, its high mycorrhizal dependency offers possibilities to develop this production and revegetation strategies.

Cell wall proteins are central to the virulence of Candida albicans. Hwp1, Hwp2 and Rbt1 form a family of hypha-associated cell surface proteins. Hwp1 and Hwp2 have been involved in adhesion and other virulence traits but Rbt1 is still poorly characterized. Inhibitory concentrations of clove oil and ethanol against growth of Saprolegnia sp. hyphae were screened by a modification of the hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed MicroPlate (HeMP) method and their usability as antifungal agents during incubation of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss eggs was tested. In vitro experiment showed that in continuous static exposure, clove oil at 100 mg L−1 significantly inhibited the growth of Saprolegnia, whereas in bath exposures, clove oil at 500 mg L−1 had no significant effect at any exposure time tested (15, 60 and 240 min), but clove oil at 10 000 mg L−1 significantly inhibited growth at all exposure times. We have used the scanning electron microscope to investigate the changes that occur in scalp hair during infection with Trichophyton violaceum . We provide information on the morphology of these dermatophytes and present evidence that their hyphae dig tunnel-like burrows into the hair shaft, dissociating hair into keratin fibrils.

The biological activity of resveratrol, a stilbenic compound synthesized by grapevines in response to various stresses, was reevaluated against Botrytis cinerea using a novel in vitro system that enabled direct observation of the fungus with an inverted microscope. We determined that 90 μg resveratrol/ml reduced germination of B. cinerea conidia by ca. 50%. Moreover, resveratrol was shown to significantly reduce mycelial growth of B. cinerea at concentrations ranging from 60 to 140 μg/ml. Pythium paroecandrum (B-30), an oomycete, was isolated from soil samples taken from a wheat field in Genlis in the Burgundy region of France and was found to check the growth and development of Botrytis cinerea, a serious grapevine pathogen. The oomycete is a fast-growing organism, living on vegetable debris, and can be recognised by its catenulate hyphal swellings, catenulate oogonia, and monoclinous antheridia. When grown together with B. cinerea, the causal agent of the grey mould disease of the grapevine, P. paroecandrum shows a pronounced antagonism and suppresses its growth and its aptitude to provoke the grey mould symptoms.
