The Role of Cadherins in Ca2+-Mediated Cell Adhesion and Inherited Photoreceptor Degeneration

Cadherins are Ca2+-binding, transmembrane proteins involved in cell adhesion. Recently, three cadherin molecules, cadherin-23, protocadherin-15, and cadherin-3, were found to be defective in various human diseases, many of them with photoreceptor degeneration and/or sensorineural hearing loss as major features such Usher syndrome type 1D (USH1D), USH1F, and hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy. The process, by which mutations lead to photoreceptor degeneration is still not fully understood. Data from the inner ear phenotype of USH1 mouse models suggest that loss of cell adhesion is a crucial event.

In a 43-year-old man dyscephalia, cataracta congenita, and hypotrichosis were the outstanding features. These signs were first described in 1953 by Ullrich and Fremerey-Dohna as a clinical entity. Since 1958 the DCH syndrome was published under the synonyms of “Francois syndrome” and of “Hallermann-Streiff syndrome”. However, as these authors did not add any essential details relevant for the classification of the syndrome we prefer to retain the term “Ullrich-Fremerey-Dohna syndrome”. Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disorder that occurs as a consequence of disturbances in the ectoderm of the developing embryo. The triad of nail dystrophy, alopecia or hypotrichosis and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis is usually accompanied by a lack of sweat glands and a partial or complete absence of primary and/ or permanent dentition. A case report illustrating the prosthetic rehabilitation of a seven year old boy with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia associated with total anodontia is presented.

The aim of this work was to assess the association between the hairless genotypes and estimated breeding values (EBVs) for milk yield (MY), fat (FAT) and protein (PRT) content in Valle del Belice dairy sheep breed. A data set from 465 randomly chosen unrelated individuals was analyzed. EBV for MY, FAT and PRT contents were estimated by REML analysis of a single trait repeatability animal model. The genotype effect on EBV was assessed by ANOVA and by the Tukey–Kramer multiple comparison test. The PCR-SSCP test showed the presence of CC and CT genotypes in Valle del Belice individuals. Abstract Background Congenital ichthyosis (CI) is a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders characterized by generalized dry skin, scaling and hyperkeratosis, often associated to erythroderma.
