Tsunami Vulnerability Evaluation for a Small Ancient Village on Eastern Sicily Coast
2022
The Ionian sea is prone to tsunamis due to its proximity to the Calabrian subduction zone, which is one of the major tsunamigenic areas of the Mediterranean. The tsunami disaster risk is, nowadays, significantly higher due to the increased exposure of buildings as a result of the economic and touristic growth of the Mediterranean coastal areas. This study focuses on Marzamemi, a small village in the western coast of Sicily, since its morphology and human presence amplify the need to assess its buildings’ vulnerability. The main objective of this research is to quantify the building vulnerability to tsunami hazards using a physical and realistic tsunami scenario. For this purpose, the relati…
Regulon-Specific Control of Transcription Elongation across the Yeast Genome
2009
Transcription elongation by RNA polymerase II was often considered an invariant non-regulated process. However, genome-wide studies have shown that transcriptional pausing during elongation is a frequent phenomenon in tightly-regulated metazoan genes. Using a combination of ChIP-on-chip and genomic run-on approaches, we found that the proportion of transcriptionally active RNA polymerase II (active versus total) present throughout the yeast genome is characteristic of some functional gene classes, like those related to ribosomes and mitochondria. This proportion also responds to regulatory stimuli mediated by protein kinase A and, in relation to cytosolic ribosomal-protein genes, it is medi…

The chemical composition of the aerial parts essential oil of S. spreitzenhoferi Heldr. (Lamiaceae) growing in Kythira island (Greece)
2022
Stachys is a large genus of economically important plants belonging to Lamiaceae family that includes about 300 species as annual or perennial herbs. Several species of this genus are extensively used in various traditional medicines. In the present study the chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Stachys spreitzenhoferi Heldr., a very rare plant, belonging to Section Candidae, endemic of South Greece and collected in the island of Kythira, was analysed by GC-MS. No one reports have been previously published on this species. The result showed the presence of large quantity of diterpenoids with manoyl oxide (22.1%), as the most abundant component. Other metabolites pr…
TFIIH Operates through an Expanded Proximal Promoter To Fine-Tune c-myc Expression
2004
A continuous stream of activating and repressing signals is processed by the transcription complex paused at the promoter of the c-myc proto-oncogene. The general transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) is held at promoters prior to promoter escape and so is well situated to channel the input of activators and repressors to modulate c-myc expression. We have compared cells expressing only a mutated p89 (xeroderma pigmentosum complementation group B [XPB]), the largest TFIIH subunit, with the same cells functionally complemented with the wild-type protein (XPB/wt-p89). Here, we show structural, compositional, and functional differences in transcription complexes between XPB and XPB/wt-89 cells at t…
Dissection of the elements of osmotic stress response transcription factor Hot1 involved in the interaction with MAPK Hog1 and in the activation of t…
2013
Abstract The response to hyperosmotic stress is mediated by the HOG pathway. The MAP kinase Hog1 activates several transcription factors, regulates chromatin-modifying enzymes and, through its interaction with RNA polymerase II, it directs this enzyme to osmotic stress-controlled genes. For such targeting, this kinase requires the interaction with transcription factors Hot1 and Sko1. However, phosphorylation of these proteins by Hog1 is not required for their functionality. In this study, we aim to identify the Hot1 elements involved in Hog1-binding and in the activation of transcription. Two-hybrid experiments demonstrated that the Hot1 sequence between amino acids 340 and 534 and the CD e…

Shooting in the ghetto: On the migration of film footage
2013
Stars of the Apocalypse. Observations on a Few Horror Movie Myths
1994
The Hollywood star system always had a counterface in the horror films. The actors and actresses deemd to embody the characters depicted in the movies were not especially versatile and, generally speaking, they were limited to these roles and genre. In these cases a more profound identification between stars and characters was at stake. These mechanisms are analyzed in this text focusing in modern horror movies and stars.
