A facile way to synthesize noble metal free TiO2 based catalysts for glycerol photoreforming

2023

In this work anaerobic heterogeneous photocatalytic solar/UV light reforming of glycerol in aqueous media was performed with Pt-photodeposition and noble metal free modified TiO2 photocatalysts prepared through ball milling, a very simple and cheap coupled catalyst preparation method. Different amounts of Cu2O or 3% CuO were loaded on TiO2 using ball milling and during each run glycerol conversion, hydrogen and CO2 formed in the gas phase and 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and glyceraldehyde (GA) in the liquid phase were determined. The results were compared with the aim to verify the effectiveness of Cu2O in replacing Pt. Using noble metal free photocatalysts, 33% glycerol conversion, 10.3% an…

Control of a fermentator for the aerobic growth of saccharomyces cerevisiae by an adaptive type-2 fuzzy logic controller

2008

On Pseudofunctors Sending Groups to 2-Groups

2023

For a category B with finite products, we first characterize pseudofunctors from B to Cat whose corresponding opfibration is cartesian monoidal. Among those, we then characterize the ones which extend to pseudofunctors from internal groups to 2-groups. If B is additive, this is the case precisely when the corresponding opfibration has groupoidal fibres.

Age-related Diseases: Key Role of Insulin Resistance for the Association Between Type II Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease

2012

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) present many relationships. Insulin resistance (IR) plays a key role in neuronal degeneration and death. Reduced energy makes neurons more sensible to oxidation causing mitochondrial damages. Moreover AD brain has lower insulin utilization, reduced expression of its receptors and of IGF 1 and 2, all necessary for neuronal survival and learning and memory processes. Hyperinsulinemia is correlated with increase of hyerphosphorilated tau-protein. SHIP2, a phosphatase, is an antagonist of PI3K. Since the PI3K plays a key role in the biological effects of insulin, its attenuation could be associated with IR in T2DM. Methods…

UNRAVELLING THE ROLES OF THE NUCLEAR PROTEIN 1 DURING ER-STRESS INDUCTION

2020

Background: NUPR1 was described as a transcriptional factor involved in the regulation of various cellular stress-response genes, playing a crucial role in the condition of the endoplasmic-reticulum (ER) stress, thus emerging as a common molecular factor of different pathologies, obesity, hepatic steatosis, and cancer. In the present work we aim to explore how NUPR1 interacts with some pivotal genes that are the major modulators of the ER stress and metabolic cell functions. In particular we investigated the biochemical and molecular effects arising from the loss of NUPR1 in ER stress physiological conditions. Methods: We used prolonged high fat diet (HFD) feeding to induce ER stress physio…

Quantum confinement effects observed by the photoluminescence of SiOx/SiO2 multilayers

2012

Spectral and decay features related to the red emission from Si nanocrystals were investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence spectra carried out on SiOx/SiO2 nanosized multilayers. On decreasing the SiOx thickness from 8.4 nm to 2.2 nm this luminescence band exhibits a blue-shift from 1.65 eV to 1.75 eV and its lifetime increases from 12μs to 17 μs. These results are discussed on the basis of previous models proposed in literature and agree with quantum confinement effects arising from differently sized Si nanocrystals in our samples.

The Rare IL22RA2 Signal Peptide Coding Variant rs28385692 Decreases Secretion of IL-22BP Isoform-1, -2 and -3 and Is Associated with Risk for Multipl…

2020

The IL22RA2 locus is associated with risk for multiple sclerosis (MS) but causative variants are yet to be determined. In a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) screen of this locus in a Basque population, rs28385692, a rare coding variant substituting Leu for Pro at position 16 emerged significantly (p = 0.02). This variant is located in the signal peptide (SP) shared by the three secreted protein isoforms produced by IL22RA2 (IL-22 binding protein-1(IL-22BPi1), IL-22BPi2 and IL-22BPi3). Genotyping was extended to a Europe-wide case-control dataset and yielded high significance in the full dataset (p = 3.17 &times

Selective aqueous oxidation of aromatic alcohols under solar light in the presence of TiO2 modified with different metal species

2022

AbstractA set of metals modified TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared starting from titanium tetraisopropoxyde and different metal precursors to study the influence of the addition of the various foreign agents on the physico-chemical and photocatalytic properties of the catalysts. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, specific surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, temperature programmed desorption after CO2 adsorption. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using as probe reactions the partial oxidation of three aromatic alcohols: benzyl al…
