Extensive nuclear gyration and pervasive non-genic transcription during primordial germ cell development in zebrafish.

2020

ABSTRACT Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the precursors of germ cells, which migrate to the genital ridge during early development. Relatively little is known about PGCs after their migration. We studied this post-migratory stage using microscopy and sequencing techniques, and found that many PGC-specific genes, including genes known to induce PGC fate in the mouse, are only activated several days after migration. At this same time point, PGC nuclei become extremely gyrated, displaying general broad opening of chromatin and high levels of intergenic transcription. This is accompanied by changes in nuage morphology, expression of large loci (PGC-expressed non-coding RNA loci, PERLs) that ar…

Inhibition of KIF20A by BKS0349 reduces endometriotic lesions in a xenograft mouse model

2019

AbstractSeveral studies have suggested a possible etiological association between ovarian endometriosis and ovarian cancer. Evidence has shown that KIF20A overexpression might confer a malignant phenotype to ovarian tumors by promoting proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. However, no data about the role of KIF20A in endometriosis have been described. In this study, the human endometrium (n = 4) was transfected by mCherry adenovirus and intraperitoneally implanted in mice. Subsequently, mice were divided in three groups (n = 8/group) that were treated with Vehicle, BKS0349 (KIF20A-antagonist) or cabergoline (dopamine receptor agonist) for 21 days. mCherry-labeled endometriotic lesions wer…

Energy poverty in Italy

2014

Despite the existence of two targeted national programmes (Bonus gas and Bonus energia) in Italy there is no official definition of energy poverty (EP). The purpose of this study is to provide the reader with a set of indicators to fill this gap. We present a range of poverty measures which estimate that between 5 and 20 per cent of households was in EP in 2012. A selection based on qualitative criteria suggests the use of a low-income/high-costs indicator modified to include the economically vulnerable households with no heating expenses. According to this statistic the proportion of households in EP during the period 1997-2012 was broadly stable at around 8 per cent. Our simul…

Prolonging in utero-like oxygenation after birth diminishes oxidative stress in the lung and brain of mice pups☆

2013

Background Fetal-to-neonatal transition is associated with oxidative stress. In preterm infants, immaturity of the antioxidant system favours supplemental oxygen-derived morbidity and mortality. Objectives To assess if prolonging in utero-like oxygenation during the fetal-to-neonatal transition limits oxidative stress in the lung and brain, improving postnatal adaptation of mice pups. Material and methods Inspiratory oxygen fraction (FiO2) in pregnant mice was reduced from 21% (room air) to 14% (hypoxia) 8–12 h prior to delivery and reset to 21% 6–8 h after birth. The control group was kept at 21% during the procedure. Reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione and its precursors [γ-glut…

N-[2-(2,2-Dimethylpropanamido)- pyrimidin-4-yl]-2,2-dimethyl- propanamide n-hexane 0.25-solvate hemihydrate

2013

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C₁₄H₂₂N₄O₂·0.25C₆H₁₄·0.5H₂O, contains two independent molecules of 2,4-bis(pivaloylamino)pyrimidine (M) with similar conformations, one water molecule and one-half n-hexane solvent molecule situated on an inversion center. In one independent M molecule, one of the two tert-butyl groups is rotationally disordered between two orientations in a 3:2 ratio. The n-hexane solvent molecule is disordered between two conformations in the same ratio. The water molecule bridges two independent M molecules via O-H...O, N-H...O and O-H...N hydrogen bonds into a 2M·H₂O unit, and these units are further linked by N-H...N hydrogen bonds into chains running in the […

Photocatalytic degradation of nitrophenols in aqueous titanium dioxide dispersion

1991

Abstract The results are reported of an investigation into the photodegradation of nitrophenol isomers carried out in aqueous titania (anatase) dispersions under various experimental conditions. We investigated the influence of various parameters on the photodegradation rate, such as the concentrations of the catalyst, dissolved oxygen and organic compound, and the presence of various anions in the dispersion. A plausible explanation is proposed for the influence of these parameters, both mechanistic and kinetic factors being accounted for. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry were used as analytical methods in order to determine intermediate products. Spectroscopic methods (UV-vis and …

Sähköiset arkistotietokannat Itämeren historiantutkimuksessa

2011

Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan merihistorian lähdeaineistojen digitointia. Tarkastelun kohteena on neljä Itämeren menneisyydestä kertovaa tietokantaa sekä yksi yleiseurooppalainen, valmisteilla oleva tietokantahanke. Esimerkkien kautta selvitetään, miksi arkistoaineistoja on päätetty digitoida, miten ja millä perusteella digitoitavat aineistot on valittu sekä sitä, millainen merkitys digitointitoiminnalla on historiantutkijoille. Työ tavoitteena on ottaa kantaa myös siihen, millainen digitointitapa on tutkijoiden näkökulmasta hyödyllisin. Digitointi on viimeisten vuosien aikana noussut yhdeksi merkittävimmistä keinoista parantaa asiakirja-aineistojen saavutettavuutta ja käytettävyyttä. Sa…

The seaweeds Fucus vesiculosus and Ascophyllum nodosum are significant contribu…

2013

Abstract. Based on the results of a pilot study in 2007, which found high mixing ratios of molecular iodine (I2) above the intertidal macroalgae (seaweed) beds at Mweenish Bay (Ireland), we extended the study to nine different locations in the vicinity of Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station on the west coast of Ireland during a field campaign in 2009. The mean values of I2 mixing ratio found above the macroalgae beds at nine different locations ranged from 104 to 393 ppt, implying a high source strength of I2. Such mixing ratios are sufficient to result in photochemically driven coastal new-particle formation events. Mixing ratios above the Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus beds …
