Mortality after in-hospital cardiac arrest in patients with COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

2021

Abstract Aim To estimate the mortality rate, the rate of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and survival with favorable neurological outcome in patients with COVID-19 after in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) and attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Methods PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, bioRxiv and medRxiv were surveyed up to 8th February 2021 for studies reporting data on mortality of patients with COVID-19 after IHCA. The primary outcome sought was mortality (in-hospital or at 30 days) after IHCA with attempted CPR. Additional outcomes were the overall rate of IHCA, the rate of non-shockable presenting rhythms, the rate of ROSC and the rate of survival with favorable neuro…

0057 : Preoperative Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15) as a novel biomarker of acute kidney injury after cardiac bypass surgery

2015

ObjectivePreviously, we demonstrated that preoperative plasma GDF15 levels significantly improved the prognostic value of the EuroSCORE for mortality after cardiac surgery. Despite the strong correlation between GDF15 and renal function, no data are available regarding the potential interest of preoperative GDF15 levels to improve the prediction of acute kidney injury (AKI) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).Design134 patients operated on for CABG of whom 50 underwent offpump surgery at our university hospital were included in this prospective, observational study. Exclusion criteria were age 80 years, previous atrial fibrillation/flutter, previous severe renal failure (estimated …

European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship Curriculum: First Edition.

2022

International audience; Pediatric cardiac anesthesia is a subspecialty of cardiac and pediatric anesthesiology dedicated to the perioperative care of patients with congenital heart disease. Members of the Congenital and Education Subcommittees of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) agreed on the necessity to develop an EACTAIC pediatric cardiac anesthesia fellowship curriculum. This manuscript represents a consensus on the composition and the design of the EACTAIC Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship program. This curriculum provides a basis for the training of future pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists by clearly defining the theoretic…

Cardiovascular imaging in the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiotoxicity: cardiovascular magnetic resonance and nuclear cardiology

2016

Chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity (CTX) is a determining factor for the quality of life and mortality of patients administered potentially cardiotoxic drugs and in long-term cancer survivors. Therefore, prevention and early detection of CTX are highly desirable, as is the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies and/or the proposal of potentially cardioprotective treatments. In recent years, cardiovascular imaging has acquired a pivotal role in this setting. Although echocardiography remains the diagnostic method most used to monitor cancer patients, the need for more reliable, reproducible and accurate detection of early chemotherapy-induced CTX has encouraged the introduction o…

Subclinical atrial fibrillation: how hard should we look?

2012

More than three decades ago, an analysis from the Framingham Heart Study revealed that atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of stroke by a factor of five in non-rheumatic AF and by a factor of 17 in rheumatic AF.1 Since then, it has convincingly been shown that anticoagulation is one of the most effective secondary stroke prophylactic treatment options, which reduces the risk of stroke by 2/3,2 even in an older population.3 AF may occur in different types and in an individual patient often starts with paroxysmal AF, but later becomes persistent or permanent AF.4 Interestingly, the risk of stroke or systemic embolism is influenced by cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, d…

Is sauna bathing protective of sudden cardiac death? A review of the evidence

2019

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a global public health burden accounting for 15–20% of all deaths. Though established atherosclerotic risk factors explain a large proportion of the risk of SCD, these factors are often absent in a large proportion of SCD victims and the pathogenesis of SCD is still not fully established. It therefore appears that additional factors may be involved. Sauna bathing is a traditional Finnish activity that is mainly used for the purposes of relaxation and pleasure. Beyond its use for these purposes, sauna bathing has been linked with several health benefits. Emerging evidence suggests that sauna bathing is associated with reduced risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) …

Prolonged-release buprenorphine formulations: Perspectives for clinical practice

2020

International audience; Buprenorphine and methadone are the two main opioid agonist treatments approved for opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine is a partial agonist of the mu opioid receptors, which has been merely available through sublingual form until now. In practice, the use of buprenorphine is smoother than that of methadone, and it induces reduced risks of overdose. However, sublingual buprenorphine also exposes to risks (e.g., withdrawal, misuse) and constraints (e.g., daily intake). Three new galenic formulations of prolonged-release buprenorphine (PRB) are being commercialized and should allow some improvements in patients' comfort and safety. This narrative review aims to describe…

Evaluation of cytokine polymorphisms (TNFalpha, IFNgamma and IL-10) in Down patients with coeliac disease.

2005

Abstract Background In Down syndrome there is an increased prevalence of coeliac disease, but the reasons for this association are yet unknown. Aims To evaluate a possible correlation between TNFα, IFNγ and IL-10 genotype polymorphisms with the susceptibility to coeliac disease in Down syndrome patients. Methods Single nucleotide polymorphisms of TNFα (−308G → A promoter region), IFNγ (+874T → A promoter region) and IL-10 (−1082G → A promoter region) have been studied in 10 Down patients with coeliac disease, in 40 Down patients without coeliac disease and in 220 healthy controls. Clinical features were also studied in coeliac disease–Down syndrome patients. Results The 10 coeliac disease–D…

2015

BackgroundPost-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) following cardiac surgery has a high prevalence and is associated with considerable morbidity.AimsTo assess the role of GDF-15, a member of the TGFβsuperfamily, as a potential new predictor of POAF after off-pump (OFP) and on-pump (ONP) coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.MethodsThis observational study recruited the first 50 patients planned for OFP surgery and the first 50 patients planned for ONP surgery. Patients referred for CABG with the following exclusion criteria: age 80 years, previous atrial fibrillation/flutter, previous treatment with Amiodarone, previous cardiac surgery, emergency surgery. Included patients were equip…

Effect of ischemic postconditioning on microvascular obstruction in reperfused myocardial infarction. Results of a randomized multicenter study in pa…

2013

Purpose: Ischemic Postconditioning (PCON) appears as a potentially beneficial tool to complement primary angioplasty in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We evaluated the impact of PCON on Microvascular Obstruction (MVO) both in patients and in a highly controlled swine model. Methods: In a multicenter study, 101 patients with a first STEMI were randomized to undergo primary angioplasty followed by PCON or primary angioplasty alone (non-PCON). MVO (lack of contrast uptake in the core of the hyperenhanced infarcted area) was quantified in late enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. In an anterior STEMI swine model based on a 90-min angioplasty balloon coronary occl…
